The Houston Texans waived Johnny Johnson III with an injury designation on Wednesday to make room to sign Quintez Cephus to the team. Johnson has appeared in just two games for the Texans after being signed as an undrafted free-agent in 2022. Cephus hasn't appeared in an NFL game since the 2022 season and has 37 career catches for 568 yards and four touchdowns across 22 career games.--Matt TerelleSource: Aaron Wilson on Twitter

Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum (Achilles) was seen at the New England Patriots' practice on Wednesday, walking without a boot or brace. It's been nearly three months since Tatum ruptured his right Achilles during the playoffs against the New York Knicks. He appears to be making great progress. An anonymous NBA scout mentioned last week that Tatum "looked way ahead" in his recovery and was "kind of shocked" by how well the six-time All-Star was moving during a basketball camp in Las Vegas. While Tatum's progress is promising, the Celtics have no reason to rush him back, and it wouldn't be surprising to still see him sit out the entire 2025-26 campaign.--Taavi PailkSource: ESPN

New York Mets starting pitcher Paul Blackburn (shoulder) will make another rehab start with Triple-A Syracuse even though he seems to be back to full strength. He threw 87 and 93 pitches in his last two rehab outings, allowing a total of three runs over 11 2/3 innings with nine strikeouts. The Mets' rotation is full for the time being, so it seems that the Mets are just keeping him stretched out and ready to go while they figure out how to use the 31-year-old righty the rest of the season. He's 0-3 in four games with a 7.71 ERA in the majors this season, but has been effective in the minors while working his way back from this shoulder impingement.--Zach ThompsonSource: MLB.com

Houston Astros outfielder/designated hitter Yordan Alvarez (hand) took batting practice on the field on Tuesday and continues to increase his workload as he works towards a possible return. Alvarez has been sidelined since May 2 and continues his long recovery from a fractured bone in his right hand. He had a setback in July, so the Astros are bringing him along especially slowly to be sure the injury doesn't recur. He only hit .210 with three homers and a .276 wOBA in his 29 games before the injury, but he has 30+ homers in four straight seasons with a .402 wOBA over those last four years. He still doesn't have a concrete timeline for a return, but he'll give Houston's lineup a huge boost when he's available.--Zach ThompsonSource: MLB.com

Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Will Howard suffered a broken finger in practice earlier in the week and will not play in his team's first preseason game against the Jacksonville Jaguars on Saturday. Head coach Mike Tomlin called the rookie quarterback "week-to-week" when speaking to reporters on Wednesday. Howard has been battling with veteran Mason Rudolph to be the backup to Aaron Rodgers to open the season, but the missed time thanks to the injury will make it tough for him to overtake Rudolph. UPDATE: Tomlin said he hasn't ruled out Howard from playing in the preseason finale on Aug. 21 against the Carolina Panthers.--Matt TerelleSource: Joe Rutter on Twitter

The San Antonio Spurs have signed forward/center Micah Potter to an Exhibit 10 contract. He will get a chance to impress during training camp after parting ways with the Utah Jazz. Potter spent three seasons in Salt Lake City on a two-way contract. 2024-25 was his most successful campaign, as Potter occasionally filled in as a starter and averaged 4.3 points with 4.3 rebounds in 18.6 minutes. Potter, who began his pro career in 2021-22 with the Detroit Pistons, turned 27 in April and clearly doesn't have many opportunities left to stick in the NBA.--Taavi PailkSource: Paul Garcia

Free-agent safety Tracy Walker has been suspended for 12 games by the NFL for an undisclosed reason, according to reports. Walker, a former starter in the secondary for the Detroit Lions, spent some time on the San Francisco 49ers' practice squad in 2024 but did not appear in any regular-season games last year. Walker was a third-round pick by the Lions back in 2018 and has racked up 398 total tackles, three interceptions, and four sacks across 79 career games.--Matt TerelleSource: Fox News on Twitter

Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher Aaron Nola (ankle, rib) continues to work his way back to the team's rotation, and he took another step in his recovery process on Wednesday by throwing 69 pitches in 3 2/3 innings in Triple-A for the Lehigh Valley IronPigs. He had three strikeouts and allowed one run on four hits and two walks. This was Nola's second rehab outing after originally landing on the injured list with a sprained ankle on May 15. While rehabbing that injury, he felt soreness in his side, and testing revealed a stress fracture in his right rib. Nola will likely make one more rehab start early next week, and he could rejoin the Phillies rotation by the middle of the month if all continues to go well. He struggled with a 6.16 ERA and 5.04 FIP in 11 starts before landing on the injured list, but the Phils and Nola's fantasy managers will hope he comes back healthy and more effective for the stretch run.--Zach ThompsonSource: Paul Casella

Forward Harrison Ingram has re-signed with the San Antonio Spurs on a two-way deal. The 22-year-old is gearing up for his second NBA season. Harrison also spent last season with the Spurs on a two-way contract after the team selected him in the second round of the 2024 draft. Ingram made only five NBA appearances, logging 35 total minutes. He had much more fun in the G League, averaging nearly a double-double during the regular season with 12.8.8 points and 9.3 rebounds per game. The Dallas-born forward is likely to spend most of the 2025-26 season in the G League again.--Taavi PailkSource: NBA.com

Free-agent running back Myles Gaskin worked out with the New York Giants on Wednesday. Gaskin spent time with the Minnesota Vikings and Jacksonville Jaguars during the 2024 season, appearing in five games for the Vikings. The veteran running back would serve as a depth option for the Giants behind Tyrone Tracy Jr. and rookie Cam Skattebo if he ultimately signs with New York.--Matt TerelleSource: Aaron Wilson on Twitter

Los Angeles Dodgers outfield prospect Zyhir Hope has hit a bit of a slump at the plate at High-A Great Lakes. Over his last seven games, the budding star has gone just 1-for-24 at the plate with one run and one RBI. During this stretch, Hope has struck out nine times, drawn six walks, and swiped three bags. However, before this stretch, Hope held an impressive .290/.392/.629 slash line with four doubles, five home runs, and a 1.021 OPS over his last 17 games. Overall, Hope has enjoyed a very productive campaign at High-A, posting an .850 OPS through a 96-game stint. Fantasy managers should keep an eye on his progression as he continues to climb prospect boards, now sitting as the No. 36 on MLB Pipeline. He is a strong stash in dynasty leagues even though he is likely two seasons away from his MLB debut.--Andy SmithSource: MiLB.com

Miami Marlins left-handed pitching prospect Thomas White continued to flash immense strikeout upside at Double-A Pensacola. In his most recent outing on August 2, the southpaw struck out an impressive seven hitters across just 4 2/3 innings of work. In this start against Biloxi, White allowed six hits, two walks, and two earned runs. In his previous outing, the top-ranked prospect in Miami struck out a season-high 14 hitters across five shutout innings with just two hits allowed. Since moving up to Double-A this season, White has posted a strong 2.55 ERA, 1.30 WHIP, with a 40:12 K:BB across 24 2/3 innings. He opened the season with High-A and posted a 2.83 ERA with 53 strikeouts across 35 innings of work. White is a name to keep a close eye on as he could push for a mid-season 2026 MLB debut.--Andy SmithSource: MiLB.com

Philadelphia Phillies shortstop prospect Aidan Miller has continued to find his footing in the batter's box. On Wednesday evening, facing Double-A New Hampshire, the No. 2-ranked prospect in the system went 1-for-5 with a double and a stolen base. This performance extended his hitting streak to eight games. During this stretch, Miller has posted an elite .387/.486/.613 slash line with four doubles, one home run, and three stolen bases. The 21-year-old has spent the entire 2025 campaign at Double-A Reading. During his first extended look at the level, Miller has struggled at times but appears to be turning the corner. However, he has continued to show immense speed upside, swiping 40 bags in just 85 games. Miller will likely debut at Triple-A early in the 2026 season.--Andy SmithSource: MiLB.com

Minnesota Twins shortstop prospect Kaelen Culpepper is enjoying a productive surge at the plate at Double-A Wichita. Over his last 10 games, Culpepper hasp osted a strong .357/.413/.619 slash line with three doubles, one triple, two home runs, and four stolen bases. The No. 4-ranked prospect in the system on MLB.com opened the campaign at the High-A level but was moved up to Double-A after a strong start. Through 54 games with High-A, he held a .293/.385/.479 slash line with a strong .864 OPS. Through his first 32 games with Double-A, Culpepper has looked even more impressive, posting a .343/.409/.545 line with a strong .954 OPS. Fantasy managers should keep an eye on him, as he could open the 2026 season with Triple-A St. Paul.--Andy SmithSource: MiLB.com

Detroit Tigers infield prospect Kevin McGonigle went 3-for-4 with a triple during their contest against Double-A Richmond on Wednesday evening. McGonigle entered this game in a bit of a slump, going 0-for-7 over his last two games. However, the top prospect was able to snap this skid rather quickly. Since joining Double-A this season, McGonigle has been nothing short of impressive, holding a .290/.375/.507 line with an .882 OPS. During this 18-game stretch, McGonigle has hit seven doubles, two home runs, and swiped three bags. Earlier in the season, McGonigle posted an elite .372/.462/.648 line across a stint at High-A West Michigan. Given his quick progression through the Detroit system, McGonigle could be in the mix to debut in the majors next season.--Andy SmithSource: MiLB.com

New York Mets right-handed pitching prospect Brandon Sproat struck out nine hitters in his latest start on July 31. In this outing, Sproat allowed just three hits and no runs across five innings. He served up three walks. This was a nice bounce-back outing for the budding ace as he allowed two runs with two walks in his previous start on July 25. Before this game, Sproat was riding an incredible 23-straight inning shutout streak. During this stretch, Sproat struck out 27 hitters while allowing only six walks with eight total hits. While he had a slow start to the season, the Florida product has been one of the best pitchers at Triple-A during the second half. Given his strong resurgence, he should be in the mix to debut in the majors in the coming weeks.--Andy SmithSource: MiLB.com

Los Angeles Dodgers outfield prospect James Tibbs III had a day to remember, as he went 4-for-4 with two home runs and four RBI against Double-A Corpus Christi. The lefty outfielder has been involved in two trades this season, with the first being the Rafael Devers deal, and he recently dealt to Los Angeles in the Dustin May deal at the July 31 deadline. He is making a strong first impression with his new team in the early going. Tibbs began the year at High-A with the Giants and has been moved to Double-A with his new clubs and is slashing .237/.363/.417 with 15 homers and five steals across the two levels. He projects as a strong-side platoon bat in the future by scouts and is in a favorable player development system with the Dodgers.--Kyle McCarthySource: MiLB.com

Chicago White Sox left-handed pitching prospect Hagen Smith picked up the win on Wednesday as he allowed two runs on four hits and five walks while striking out six across five innings against Double-A Chattanooga. The five walks were the second-highest in a start this season for the lefty, but he managed to limit the damage otherwise. His swing and miss stuff was on display despite his lack of control, with 18 swings and misses. It's been a solid season for the 2024 fifth overall pick, despite not moving quite as quickly through the White Sox system as some anticipated. The 21-year-old missed some time this year due to injury, and the walks have been a real concern. He holds a 3.60 ERA, 1.28 WHIP, and a 75:37 K:BB ratio through 50 innings at Double-A. Managers in dynasty leagues should still have high hopes while also keeping a close eye on his development track.--Kyle McCarthySource: MiLB.com

Baltimore Orioles catcher prospect Samuel Basallo went 1-for-3 with a home run and three RBI against Triple-A Rochester on Wednesday. The 20-year-old phenom showed off his impressive power to all areas of the field, crushing a 1-1 changeup to left-center field. He's now homered for the third consecutive game and has multiple RBIs in three of his last four. This monster stretch during August has nudged his season-long OPS over 1.000 as he's compiled 23 homers in 71 games. His .335 isolated slugging is the best among all Triple-A hitters. Basallo has some of the best raw power of any prospect with a smooth, adaptable lefty swing that allows him to hit for damage on a variety of pitch locations. The quality of contact is absurd, and he makes plenty of contact to not be overly concerned with the swing and miss. He should be viewed as the best prospect in baseball and stashed away in fantasy leagues for his eventual arrival.--Kyle McCarthySource: MiLB.com

The Houston Astros moved third baseman Isaac Paredes (hamstring) from the 15-day injured list to the 60-day IL on Wednesday. The move means Paredes won't be eligible to return until mid-September, and it's up in the air whether he'll play again this year. Paredes went on the IL on July 20 with a significant right-hamstring strain, which could go down as a season-ending injury. The 26-year-old earned his second straight All-Star invitation in the first half after slashing .259/.359/.470 with 19 homers, 50 RBI, and 51 runs scored over 409 plate appearances. Paredes recently underwent a PRP injection and is putting off surgery in hopes of coming back this year. If he's unable to do that, the Astros are prepared to go without him after acquiring Carlos Correa and Ramon Urias at last week's trade deadline.--Connor ByrneSource: Matt Kawahara - Houston Chronicle

Chicago White Sox first base prospect Tim Elko went 1-for-3 with a home run and three RBI in Wednesday's 6-0 win against Triple-A Syracuse. Elko was activated from the IL and optioned to Triple-A Charlotte on Monday, and didn't wait long to get back to doing damage at the plate. He's now up to 19 homers and a .315/.385/.610 slash line in 270 plate appearances at the level. The quality of contact is excellent for Elko, with a 52.6 percent hard-hit rate and 12.8 percent barrel rate. The slugging first baseman came up to the majors for a brief period, but his swing and miss issues were on display with a 41.8 percent strikeout rate. The 26-year-old did slug four homers in that time and continued to hit the ball hard when he did make contact. There's a good possibility Elko returns to the majors before the season ends, and he's a decent option for fantasy managers looking for cheap power in deep formats and AL-only leagues.--Kyle McCarthySource: MiLB.com

Houston Astros right-hander Spencer Arrighetti came off the injured list to make his first start since April 5 on Wednesday. It didn't go well. Facing the Miami Marlins, Arrighetti fell to 1-2 after coughing up five earned runs on a whopping 11 hits over 3 2/3 innings in a 6-4 loss. He threw 88 pitches (56 for strikes) and posted five strikeouts against one walk in his return from a thumb injury that shelved him for four months. The 25-year-old has made three starts this season and notched a 7.42 ERA (4.69 FIP) with a 1.58 WHIP, 13 strikeouts, and six walks in 13 1/3 frames. Arrighetti is scheduled to get the ball again on Tuesday, but he's in for a challenge with the Boston Red Sox coming to town.--Connor ByrneSource: ESPN

San Francisco Giants left-handed reliever Erik Miller (elbow) will begin a rehab assignment with Triple-A Sacramento on Friday. Miller has been out for just over a month with a sprained left elbow, though he could come back sometime in August if he doesn't suffer any setbacks. The 27-year-old has recorded a minuscule 1.50 ERA with 10 holds across 36 appearances and 30 innings this season. However, his success in preventing runs has come despite a lackluster 22:20 K:BB. With a 4.38 xERA, a 3.95 FIP, and a 5.10 xFIP, Miler is likely to face negative regression when he comes back this season.--Connor ByrneSource: MLB.com

Arizona Diamondbacks catcher Gabriel Moreno (finger) threw out to 90 feet and caught right-hander Zac Gallen's bullpen session on Tuesday, Alex Weiner of Arizona Sports reports. Moreno also hit off a tee for the second straight day as he continues working back from a hairline fracture in his right index finger. The 25-year-old hasn't played since June 14, but a CT scan came back clean Monday, paving the way for a potential mid-August return. Moreno hit .270/.324/.414 with five homers, 20 RBI, and 29 runs scored over 188 plate appearances before he went on the IL. James McCann and Jose Herrera have split catching duties for Arizona in Moreno's absence.--Connor ByrneSource: Alex Weiner - Arizona Sports

Carolina Panthers defensive back Jaycee Horn (hand) did not participate in Wednesday's practice. According to Adam Schefter, Horn was involved in a car crash prior to Wednesday's practice. Head coach Dave Canales said Horn required stitches on his left hand. The Panthers have already ruled out Horn for the preseason opener on Friday. This doesn't sound like the type of issue that would force Horn to miss any time in the regular season. He's currently projected to be the starting defensive back alongside Mike Jackson. Last season, Horn recorded 49 tackles, two sacks, and one interception in 15 games.--Andy WebbSource: Adam Schefter
