Chase Burns Superb in 10-Strikeout Performance
Chase Burns turned in a tremendous start in a no-decision against the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday. Although the Reds ended up falling 3-2, Burns excelled with six innings of one-run, three-hit ball and 10 strikeouts against one walk. The second overall pick in last year's draft, Burns has already become the first pitcher in league history to record double-digit strikeouts four times in his first eight starts. The 22-year-old flamethrower has fanned a whopping 57 hitters in total while issuing 13 walks in his first 34 1/3 innings in the majors. Despite the gaudy strikeout numbers, Burns has had difficulty keeping runs off the board, as shown by his 5.24 ERA. However, his xFIP (2.28) and FIP (2.44) rank among the best in the league since his promotion. His BABIP dropped from .394 to .377 on Friday, and if that bloated figure continues to decrease, it'll bode well for Burns down the stretch. He's scheduled to face a formidable Philadelphia offense in his next start on Wednesday. Burns held the Phillies to one run and two hits with 7:4 K:BB over 4 2/3 innings in a no-decision on July 6.
