Although Cole Custer has lacked speed all season since his return to the NASCAR Cup Series, he easily had his best run of the year at Mexico City on Sunday. Not only did he finish eighth to earn his first top-10 finish of the season, but he actually ran in the top 10 for most of the race, posted an average running position of 12th, and earned a driver rating of 96.5 (his best since 2022 and second-best of his career). Despite starting 26th, Custer advanced quickly through the field in the wet portion of the race and drove from 24th to 12th from Laps 5 to 7. After flipping the first two stages to enter the top 10, Custer significantly benefited from the fact that crew chief Aaron Kramer elected to make the No. 41 team's final pit stop shortly before a caution came out, which allowed Custer to jump to fourth. Although he faded to eighth after faster cars passed him, it was arguably his first sign of life this season.--Sean Wrona - RotoBaller
