Fantasy Football Outlooks for Rookie Wide Receivers

Travis Hunter, Jacksonville Jaguars

New Jacksonville Jaguars wide receiver/cornerback hybrid Travis Hunter was selected No. 2 overall by the Jacksonville Jaguars. He'll join forces with one of the brightest offensive minds in the league, newly-hired Jags head coach Liam Coen.

While Coen befuddlingly doesn't get much credit for his masterpiece of a Tampa Bay Buccaneers offense in 2024, he helped quarterback Baker Mayfield to his best career year by far, and produced four elite fantasy football players (Mayfield, WRs Chris Godwin and Mike Evans, and RB Bucky Irving). Thus, it's hard not to think that Coen can help quarterback Trevor Lawrence have a monster year, and thus both receivers, Brian Thomas Jr. and Hunter.

Hunter is an interesting case because he'll almost certainly play defense. Yet, Coen has already stated that he'll start out playing mostly at wideout. To think that Coen, an offensive-minded coach, wants to take an elite talent like Hunter as a WR and put him on defense most of the time seems preposterous. Expect a huge year out of Hunter. He should be a league winner in all formats.

- John Johnson

Jayden Higgins, Houston Texans

Rookie Houston Texans wide receiver Jayden Higgins is stepping into a golden opportunity. Higgins was drafted with the No. 2 pick in the second round of the 2025 NFL Draft. With wide receivers Tank Dell and Stefon Diggs dealing with injury and departing in free agency, respectively, the Texans had a massive void to fill opposite No. 1 option Nico Collins. Like Collins, Higgins is a 6-foot-4 athletic freak. He ran a 4.47 40-yard dash and provides the Texans with a combination of a deep threat and red zone target.

Higgins was relatively productive over the last couple of seasons in the NCAA. In 2024, he recorded 1,183 yards and nine touchdowns on 87 receptions. He is a volume king with serious touchdown upside. The Texans' wide receiver room is crowded, but Higgins is clearly the second-most talented among the bunch. Additionally, new acquisitions Jaylin Noel and Christian Kirk are slot players and should not compete with Higgins for playing time.

As such, Higgins could be the No. 2 option for a good quarterback in C.J. Stroud in Week 1. Having a player like Collins on the other side of the field will open lanes for Higgins at every level. This is a player who could easily finish as a WR2 this season. Considering that he is currently being drafted outside of the top 50 at the position and RotoBaller has him ranked as WR76, he would be an immense steal in fantasy drafts as he should be, at minimum, a flex option throughout the season.

- Quincy Milton III

Tre Harris, Los Angeles Chargers

Los Angeles Chargers rookie wide receiver Tre Harris landed in one of the best possible situations for a first-year wideout, especially considering his skill set and limitations. He was drafted in the second round, so he has solid draft capital, and he'll join WR Ladd McConkey to serve as the team's clear top-2 receivers.

While there are valid questions about Harris' athleticism, as he ran a 4.54-second 40-yard dash and doesn't have the explosiveness to sell his routes as ideally as he could, playing with quarterback Justin Herbert helps quite a bit. Herbert has a rocket launcher of an arm, and his completion percentage and passer rating are phenomenal when throwing to receivers running the routes that Harris performed best in -- namely, slant routes and comeback routes.

Harris will have McConkey to help draw coverage priority away from him as well. While he might not thrive on deep passes in the NFL owing to his lack of pure speed, he could be an excellent chain-mover and still earn plenty of targets. Herbert should unlock his potential, and he should be a worthy flex player in most leagues in 2025.

- John Johnson

Jack Bech, Las Vegas Raiders

Las Vegas Raiders wide receiver Jack Bech was selected by his new team near the end of the second round, giving him very good draft capital. It's a bit of a red flag that he didn't test at the 2025 NFL Combine, and his speed would likely have disappointed. Still, the tape is hard to argue with. Bech is a pretty polished route-runner who's a menace at the catch point and with the ball in his hands.

He's consistent with his routes and understands how to use leverage to create separation between himself and opposing defensive backs. And even on plays where he doesn't separate well, his quarterback will be able to trust him, because he has vise grips for hands and can fight hard for every possession. With the ball in his hands, Bech is a beast. Fantastic effort shines on his tape, and he's often able to break tackles and carry other tacklers with him for extra yards.

A WR in the NFL with a similar skillset is Los Angeles Rams wideout Puka Nacua -- both shined in similar areas and to similar degrees in college. Bech will likely step into the role once occupied by Raiders WR Tre Tucker (largely due to a lack of other receiving options for the team), which should immediately earn him hefty playing time and opportunities. With quarterback Geno Smith throwing to him, Bech is a sneaky sleeper in redraft leagues and has the potential to finish as a WR2, even with tight end Brock Bowers and WR Jakobi Meyers competing with him for targets.
