Traded from the New York Yankees for Starlin Castro, Adam Warren arrives in Chicago as an interesting project. He spent the majority of his first three seasons as a reliever with the ability to pitch extended innings, but he became New York’s fifth last year in the wake of Ivan Nova’s injury. His season can be seen as a split between starter and reliever, which makes him intriguing for the Cubs. As a starter, he went 6-6 in 17 games, with a 3.66 ERA, 1.22 WHIP and 67 strikeouts, while as a reliever he made 26 appearances, going 1-1 with a 2.29 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 37 strikeouts. With Jason Hammel having pitched poorly down the stretch last season, and the bullpen going closer by committee at one point, it seems that his new team could use his services in both areas. As of now, the likeliest result seems to be him battling for a spot in the starting rotation, but if he loses out, he’ll be in the bullpen. Warren isn’t someone to consider in the draft at this point, but of course things can change if he does win a spot in the rotation. If not, you’re probably once again looking at a spot starter-type year for Warren, where an injury to the rotation might make him a solid midseason pickup.
