John Mateer to Undergo Thumb Surgery on Wednesday
Oklahoma quarterback John Mateer is expected to have thumb surgery on Wednesday to repair his thumb on his right (throwing) hand. He could miss up to a month. Mateer suffered the injury in the first quarter of Oklahoma's 24-17 win over Auburn on Saturday. He was able to stay in the game and finished the day completing 24 of 36 passes for 271 yards and a touchdown. The Oklahoma medical staff decided that the best course of treatment was surgery on his thumb. Backup Michael Hawkins Jr. is expected to start for the Sooners against Kent State, Texas, and South Carolina. Hawkins has only thrown three passes this season but started as a freshman last year while Jackson Arnold was injured. Hawkins threw for 783 yards and three touchdowns in 2024 but also had two interceptions. He was sacked six times in the blowout loss to Texas last year.
