Fantasy Baseball Players To Monitor Closely

Adolis Garcia, OF - Texas Rangers

Rostered: 54% Yahoo!
Estimated Return: September 12

Garcia has been on the shelf with a quad injury since September 2, but there is optimism that he will be available to return later this week.

The Rangers slugger is hitting just .235, but he has still managed to launch 18 home runs this season. Garcia also swung a hot bat in August, hitting .288 with three home runs and eight doubles in 19 games. The quad injury has taken him off the field, but he could be a valuable fantasy asset during these final weeks if he picks up where he left off.

The 32-year-old has participated in agility drills and could return when he's first eligible on Friday, September 12. Garcia has been one of the best power hitters in baseball in recent years, hitting at least 25 home runs in the last four seasons. If Garcia catches fire, he has the ability to carry a fantasy team.

Garcia is available in 54% of Yahoo! leagues, so it's worth checking to see if he's available in yours.

Chase Burns, SP - Cincinnati Reds

Rostered: 49% Yahoo!
Estimated Return: September 12

Burns came onto the scene a bit shaky, but in his short time, he's established himself as one of the best strikeout pitchers in baseball. The rookie has been dealing with an elbow injury, but should return this Friday, September 12.

Burns has only pitched 34 1/3 innings so far in his young career, but among starting pitchers with at least 30 innings pitched, Burns leads in K/9 by a wide margin. To put his strikeout numbers into perspective, Burns has a higher K/9 than Mason Miller, who many would consider the best strikeout relief pitcher in the league.

The sky is the limit when it comes to Burns' potential, but he may not reach those heights this season. Reds manager Terry Francona has mentioned that Burns could be utilized out of the bullpen to finish the year, which hurts his value as a starting pitcher, but he could still be viable if the Reds decide to go that route.

The 22-year-old can provide excellent strikeout numbers on a per-inning basis, which could provide a nice boost. Burns is available in 49% of Yahoo! leagues, meaning he's available in just over half of leagues. He's an excellent pitcher to grab before he's activated on Friday.

Wilyer Abreu, OF - Boston Red Sox

Rostered: 44% Yahoo!
Estimated Return: September 16-18

Abreu was having an excellent season before injuries derailed his progress. The Red Sox outfielder dealt with an oblique injury in June and has been sidelined with a calf injury since the middle of August. Despite dealing with multiple injuries, Abreu's season-long statistics still look great, and he could be a contributor as soon as he returns next week.

Abreu was playing so well to begin the season that his performance likely delayed the promotion of baseball's top prospect, Roman Anthony. The Red Sox had a crowded outfield, and Abreu was arguably the best of the bunch in the early goings.

The 26-year-old is slashing .253/.325/.486 with 22 home runs and 16 doubles despite missing 37 games this season. Abreu is slated to return next week and contribute to a team that's firmly in the American League wild-card race.

Abreu should provide ample power upon his return, as shown by his 88th percentile xSLG of .513. The Red Sox slugger is rostered in 44% of Yahoo! leagues, and that number should be a lot higher given how good he's been when active.

Jameson Taillon, SP - Chicago Cubs37

Rostered: 28% Yahoo!
Estimated Return: September 10

Taillon was one of the most dependable starters in the Cubs rotation earlier this season, and he's slated to make his return on Wednesday, September 10.
The Cubs pitcher has delivered 11 quality starts in 106 1/3 innings this season, making him tied for the 10th-most quality starts. Quality starts are an important stat to track since they demonstrate a pitcher's ability to pitch deep into games while limiting the amount of runs they give up. Taillon's ability to produce quality starts makes him an especially attractive asset in points leagues.
Taillon is set to make his return to the rotation on September 10 against the lowly Atlanta Braves. The Braves are sitting 14 games below .500, and Austin Riley has already been ruled out for the remainder of the season.
Taillon is rostered in just 28% of Yahoo! leagues, making him widely available for those seeking pitching help. Whether you need a spot start for this week or a reliable back-end starter for the last few weeks, Taillon can provide value as a veteran pitcher who knows how to get outs.
Paul Sewald, RP - Detroit Tigers

Rostered: 1% Yahoo!
Estimated Return: Mid-September

Sewald has not pitched since the middle of July, but he could be a valuable relief pitcher for the Tigers during the final month of the season.

The Tigers acquired Sewald from the Cleveland Guardians at the deadline with the hopes that he would be able to help their bullpen towards the end of the regular season and into the playoffs. Sewald is a pitcher with closer experience, and it would not be surprising if he were to take over that role when healthy.

The 35-year-old will have to compete with Tommy Kahnle for the closer job. Kahnle has a 4.80 ERA this season and only 17 career saves in 11 years. Sewald has 86 career saves and is only a couple of years removed from being one of the best relief pitchers in baseball.

Sewald racked up 34 saves in 2023 with a 3.12 ERA and an 11.87 K/9. The veteran reliever ranked seventh in saves and 20th in K/9 among relief pitchers that season. If the Tigers can get anything close to that level of production from Sewald, he will be an excellent addition to the bullpen and a valuable pitcher to roster for fantasy.

Sewald is rostered in just 1% of Yahoo! leagues, making him the easiest player to acquire on this list. Fantasy managers should look to add Sewald because he could be the closer for one of the best teams in baseball during the final weeks of the season.
