Robert Suarez Picks Up Win on Sunday
Robert Suarez (2-3) threw a scoreless ninth inning Sunday to collect his second win in a 3-2 game against the Kansas City Royals. The right-hander entered a 2-2 tie and retired the first two batters he faced before running into trouble. Suarez walked Drew Waters and then allowed a double to Freddy Fermin, but his defense bailed him out. Waters was thrown out at home on a well-executed relay while trying to score on Fermin's hit. The Padres then walked off the Royals on a Jose Iglesias fielder's choice in the bottom of the ninth. Although he was hardly dominant, Suarez ended a streak of three straight appearances allowing at least one run. He gave up a ghastly seven earned runs and combined for just one inning in that brutal stretch. For the most part, the 34-year-old has performed well this season. He owns a 3.62 ERA with 33:9 K:BB over 32 1/3 frames and has converted 21 of 23 save opportunities.
