LIV Golf Betting Picks - 2025 Virginia

Talor Gooch - LIV, PGA, Golfer, DFS, Fantasy Golf

Matt Miller's LIV golf betting picks and betting strategies for 2025 Virginia event at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club. He digs into the LIV golf betting lines to find the best bets and top values.

The LIV Golf League will hold this week’s event at Robert Trent Jones Golf Club. The course was designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. and opened in 1991. It is located in Gainesville, Virginia, located on Lake Manassas, about 30 miles outside Washington D.C. The lake serves as a nice backdrop for many holes on the course.

Robert Trent Jones Golf Club hosted the first four Presidents Cups held in the United States. Phil Mickelson was a member of all four United States teams and is the only player in the field this week to have played in any of the four Presidents Cups. The course also hosted the Quicken Loans National event on the PGA Tour in 2015, which was won by Troy Merritt at -18. Danny Lee finished T4 at that event, and LIV golfers Charles Howell, Cameron Tringale, Jason Kokrak Carlos Ortiz and Brendan Steele were also in the field that week.

The event will take place from Friday to Sunday and will air on the Fox Sports Network, as well as the Fox Sports App and LIV Golf Plus. Globally, the event will be broadcast in over 160 international territories, Live and On-Demand, free of charge, via LIV Golf Plus.

LIV Golf Virginia Course Breakdown

Below is the official Round 1 scorecard provided by LIV Golf.

Hole 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 Out
Par 4 4 4 3 5 4 4 5 3 36
Yardage 471 423 497 207 557 432 442 583 203 3643
Hole 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 In
Par 4 3 4 4 5 4 3 4 4 35
Yardage 323 190 505 472 615 466 179 377 476 3701

The course will play as a 7,354 yard par-71. Despite being located on Lake Manassas, water only comes into play on a few holes. The challenge of the course this week will be on and around the greens. The greens are undulating and feature multiple tiers in some cases. Players have emphasized the importance of not missing in the wrong spots or big numbers could come into play.

While there is a lot of hype around the course this week, and deservedly so, Troy Merritt did win the PGA Tour event held here back in 2015 with a score of -18. That leads me to believe that good scores are out there this week for players who stay out of trouble. Merritt was around middle of the road on the PGA Tour in driving distance in 2015, so although it is a small sample size, I don’t view this as a bomber’s track. I think the key to success this week will actually be playing out of the fairway and avoiding trouble.

Due to the multiple tiers of the greens and difficulty of speed and positioning, I expect accuracy to be more important than distance this week. It will be easier for players to not only hit the green but find the right tier of the green if they are playing out of the fairway as opposed to the rough. Approach play will, as always, be the most important metric of the week, but I do believe that this is not the type of course players can bomb and gauge their way around. It will be tough to score when out of position off the tee.

Lastly, with the speed and challenging contours of the greens, putting will be important this week. In particular I will be looking for players who can avoid three putts. There will be times when players have to judge speed perfectly when navigating different tiers of the putting surface or lag-putting from long distance.

LIV Golf Betting Strategy & Selections - Virginia

Brooks Koepka +2900 (FanDuel)

Despite not having the greatest finishes, Brooks Koepka was trending the right direction prior to the PGA Championship. He had gained strokes on approach in six straight starts and strokes off the tee in five of six. In his last start prior to the PGA Championship in Korea, he finally got the putter going, which had been holding him back in the early part of the season. Everything went south at Quail Hollow when Koepka missed his second straight cut at a major to start 2025.

That said, Brooks has now had a month to get things straightened out since his poor showing at the PGA Championship. Full disclosure, I am moderately concerned that he spent last week in Miami with his wife for Sports Illustrated Swim week. However, we know Koepka likes to turn things up during major season, and he’s now gone eight straight major appearances without a top 15 finish, the longest drought of his career. I expect him to be highly motivated to play well this week.

When things are clicking for the Smash GC captain, he is one of the top players in the league. The five-time major winner is beginning to drift to a number on the odds board that makes him difficult to pass on.

Talor Gooch +3500 (DraftKings)

Talor Gooch is starting to show signs of life again. In his last three starts he has finished T12, T13 and solo third. Gooch has gained strokes off the tee in three of his last four starts and on approach in two straight starts. Gooch had his best approach week since October in his last start in Korea.

More importantly, he is making putts again. After four straight bad putting events to start the LIV season, Gooch has now gained strokes putting in his last three starts. With the challenge of the greens this week in Virginia, a good putting week will be necessary for players to have a chance to win, and it appears Gooch has the putter figured out again.

At an event where the key to success is staying out of trouble off the tee and having a good short game, Gooch is seemingly a perfect fit. His game looks like it is back in a good place and I don’t think the odds have fully reflected that yet.

Dustin Johnson +5000 (DraftKings)

I feel like a bit of a broken record, but we’ve seen flashes from Dustin Johson. He held the early lead in Singapore and ended up finishing T5. Johnson finished T7 finish in Mexico City, and had a share of the lead through 34 holes at Doral before imploding on 17 and 18 on Saturday and ruining his chances to win. While the failure to put three straight good rounds together is concerning, I still believe DJ has the talent to win.

If you look at where DJ has drifted to on the odds board, I still think he is worth the bet. There are a few names down there that have maybe shown more consistency than Johnson, but none that I would have more confidence in to actually win a tournament if they were in the mix on Sunday. Therefore, I will take a chance that the stretches of good play come together after a month off, and DJ finds himself back in the mix to win on Sunday.

Abraham Ancer +6000 (FanDuel)

This is strictly a number and course fit play. Ancer is one of the most accurate drivers of the golf ball in the world and will have no issue putting himself in good position off the tee. He has struggled with his irons over his last three starts but was playing well to start the year, with three top twelve finishes in LIV’s first four events. Ancer finished 12th in the overall LIV standings in 2024.

The month off to reset may be a big boost to Abraham Ancer’s game. He won last year in Korea, defeating Cam Smith and Paul Casey in a playoff. Being able to bet a top fifteen player in the league, who has proven that he can win, at a number like 60-1 is too much for me to pass on. If the approach play has been straightened out, I believe Ancer has a shot to win.
