When is Roman Anthony getting called up? Will Roman Anthony play this MLB season? Read about Roman Anthony's debut date and fantasy baseball prospect updates for 2025.
The Boston Red Sox made some of the most exciting offseason moves entering the 2025 MLB season. They signed third baseman Alex Bregman and starting pitcher Garrett Crochet to be more competitive in the AL East after missing out on the playoffs in 2024 with an 81-81 record.
So far this season, the Red Sox offense is slashing .251/.323/.383 with 85 runs scored. So it's not to say that the offense needs reinforcements right now, but at the same time, it's hard to hold back their top prospect, Roman Anthony, when his upside is undeniable.
The overall sentiment for Anthony seems to be that it is more of a matter of when, not if, he gets the call-up in 2025. With that said, when should we expect it to happen?

Roman Anthony Prospect Update for Fantasy Baseball
Anthony is starting to heat up in Triple-A. Over his last four contests, the outfielder has held an impressive .438/.471/.563 slash line with two doubles and three RBI. He is slashing .283/.441/.500 for the season with two home runs, eight runs scored, and seven RBI in 13 games.
What’s even more impressive is that he is slashing .300/.440/.400 in 20 at-bats against left-handed pitchers. When waiting on prospects to get called up, teams often want to see them have strong splits against both right-handed and left-handed pitchers, especially left-handed hitters facing a southpaw.
According to MLB Pipeline's top 100, Anthony is considered the top prospect in Boston and the No. 2 prospect in baseball. The 20-year-old had an underwhelming spring training, where he slashed .206/.391/.324 and did not win a spot in the outfield to start the 2025 campaign; however, his talent will eventually prevail, and we are starting to see that over the past few days.

With the signing of Bregman, former third baseman Rafael Devers is now occupying the designated hitter spot full time, and outfielder Wilyer Abreu has gotten off to a red-hot start. The player to keep an eye on here is Ceddanne Rafaela. He is currently slashing .222/.288/.259 with no home runs, eight runs scored, eight RBI, and four stolen bases.
It's still unclear when Anthony will get promoted to the big leagues, but if he were to get called up in the short term, it's likely because of Rafaela's struggles. At least it appears, based on production, that Rafaela is the odd man out with 2024 All-Star Jarren Duran occupying the other outfield spot.
Roman Anthony Outlook for Fantasy Baseball
Anthony led the Double-A Eastern League in slugging (.489) and OPS (.856) as a 20-year-old last season, then slashed .344/.463/.519 in 35 games following his promotion to Triple-A. His bat has a lot of pop, and his elite ceiling makes it worth stashing him on your bench and doing so before your league mates.

My recommendation is to only roster him if your bench spots permit it. As a fantasy manager, you don't want to pigeonhole yourself into a tough situation by holding him, but if you have a large bench and the room, you should roster Anthony.
His elite upside alone is enough to hold him for now, and fantasy managers can hope for some positive news about his promotion sooner rather than later. Those in shallow leagues who don't have the space to stash him can sit this one out for now and be prepared to use a top waiver bid or 20-35 percent or more of their FAAB.
