Fantasy Baseball Injury Reports for Pitchers - Updates for Max Scherzer, Jared Jones, Kodai Senga, Reese Olson, Christian Scott, Braxton Garrett, more

Max Scherzer - Fantasy Baseball Rankings, MLB Injury News, DFS and Betting Picks

Fantasy baseball injury updates and injury reports for MLB pitchers as of 7/25/2024, including Max Scherzer, Jared Jones, Kodai Senga, Reese Olson, Christian Scott, Braxton Garrett, and more.

As MLB teams push to qualify for the postseason, it's important to get their key players back to health. The same applies to fantasy baseball squads. That said, we have the latest updates on stud pitchers around the league. Let's take a look at injured pitchers Max Scherzer, Jared Jones, Kodai Senga, Reese Olson, Christian Scott, Braxton Garrett, and more.

This is our weekly edition of fantasy baseball injury updates for pitchers as of July 25, 2024. Whether your top ace is out of action, or a depth player is banged up, some players on this list are sure to affect fantasy baseball lineup decisions.

Be sure to check all of our fantasy baseball lineup tools and resources:

Max Scherzer Injury Update

Texas Rangers starting pitcher Max Scherzer (arm) is scheduled to take the ball against the Chicago White Sox on Thursday. This is good news after Scherzer had an early exit during his outing on Saturday due to arm fatigue. It appears Scherzer has avoided serious injury and will get the ball again later this week. Fantasy managers should make sure to get Scherzer back in their lineups for a favorable matchup against the struggling White Sox offense.

Jared Jones Injury Update

Pittsburgh Pirates hurler Jared Jones (lat) threw from flat ground during a bullpen session at PNC Park on Tuesday as he bids to return from the injured list. He was able to throw roughly 90-120 feet. Jones was placed on the injured list on July 4 after 16 starts in which he went (5-6) with a 3.56 ERA and 1.11 WHIP over 91 innings.

He has struck out 98 batters while walking 27. Once Jones returns, he will form an imposing top of the rotation that includes All-Star Paul Skenes and Mitch Keller, so fantasy managers should continue patiently waiting for him.

Kodai Senga Injury Update

New York Mets right-hander Kodai Senga (shoulder, triceps) will return from the 60-day injured list to make his season debut this Friday against the division-rival Atlanta Braves. Senga has been out all season after suffering a right shoulder injury in spring training and then having a setback during his recovery with a triceps ailment.

The 31-year-old Japanese hurler is finally good to go, though, and is hoping to go five innings or 85 pitches in his 2024 debut to kick off the weekend. Although the Braves are actually a solid matchup now for pitchers in fantasy, Senga will be more of a risk in his first big-league start of the season. He was the Mets' ace in his first year in MLB last year, though, and could be a difference-maker down the stretch for fantasy pitching staffs as long as he's healthy.

Reese Olson Injury Update

Detroit Tigers right-hander Reese Olson's shoulder injury appears to be mild after testing, according to manager A.J. Hinch. However, there's still no timetable for how long Olson is expected to be on the 15-day injured list. A right-shoulder strain caused the 24-year-old to be removed from his last outing on Saturday against the Toronto Blue Jays, and he landed on the IL the following day.

This is good news for Olson, but it remains to be seen if he'll miss the minimum 15 days. The former 13th-round pick of the Milwaukee Brewers in 2018 has looked better in his sophomore campaign, posting a 3.23 ERA (3.11 FIP) and 1.18 WHIP despite a reduced 21.7% strikeout rate in 103 innings pitched over his 19 starts for the Tigers. Olson deserves to be stashed in deep-mixed leagues, especially if he could return on the first day he's eligible to be reinstated from the IL.

Christian Scott Injury Update

The New York Mets placed rookie right-hander Christian Scott (elbow) on the 15-day injured list (retroactive to July 22) with a right-UCL sprain on Tuesday and recalled left-handed reliever Alex Young from Triple-A Syracuse in a corresponding move. This is pretty bad news for the young 25-year-old pitching prospect, as this could lead to Tommy John surgery, which would sideline him for the rest of 2024 and most, if not all, of next year as well.

Fantasy managers in single-year leagues shouldn't expect Scott to be of much use for the rest of this season, if he even makes it back to New York's rotation. He'll be replaced in the rotation by Kodai Senga (shoulder, triceps), who will make his season debut on Friday against Atlanta. Scott debuted to much fanfare in 2024, only to go 0-3 with a 4.56 ERA and 1.20 WHIP with a below-average 19.8% strikeout rate and eight homers allowed in nine starts (47 1/3 innings).

Braxton Garrett Injury Update

Miami Marlins left-hander Braxton Garrett (forearm) began playing catch this week after being put on the 15-day injured list back on June 23 with a left forearm strain. The Marlins are being careful with the 26-year-old southpaw given his history of arm injuries, but it sounds like he's finally ramping up as he prepares to return to Miami's starting rotation in the second half of the 2024 season. Before returning to the big-league pitching staff, Garrett is going to need at least a couple of minor-league rehab starts, so fantasy managers shouldn't expect him back until at least mid-August.

The former seventh overall pick in 2016 struggled in his first seven starts earlier this year before going on the shelf, recording a 5.35 ERA (3.80 FIP) and 1.19 WHIP with a 21.1% strikeout rate but with a strong 2.5% walk rate in 37 frames.

Ryan Weathers Injury Update

Miami Marlins left-hander Ryan Weathers (finger) has resumed playing catch this week as he recovers from a strained left index finger that landed him on the 15-day injured list in early June. Fantasy managers have probably been frustrated that Weathers is just now throwing again after missing six-plus weeks with a finger injury.

The good news is that he's throwing, but the 24-year-old southpaw still has a ways to go before he's a realistic candidate to rejoin Miami's starting rotation. Given the way that he was throwing the baseball before his unfortunate finger injury, fantasy managers in deeper leagues should keep him stashed in an IL spot. Weathers was looking good in his first full year in South Beach with a 3.55 ERA and 1.14 WHIP with a 22.5% strikeout rate and a career-low 6.7% walk rate in 71 innings and 13 starts.

Ricky Tiedemann Injury Update

Toronto Blue Jays pitching prospect Ricky Tiedemann is (elbow) getting second and third opinions on his left elbow this week. Tiedemann is scheduled to make visits to Dr. Keith Meister in Texas and Dr. Neal ElAttrache in California to evaluate his throwing elbow. The Blue Jays should have more information by next week regarding the hurler's injury, but fantasy managers in dynasty leagues should expect Toronto to proceed with an abundant level of caution with their No. 1 prospect.

Tiedemann had worked his way back from ulnar nerve inflammation in his left elbow earlier this year, but in his first start back with Triple-A Buffalo, he left with what was described at the time as left forearm tightness. It's becoming less and less likely that we'll see the 21-year-old left-hander make his major league debut later in 2024.

Gregory Santos Injury Update

Seattle Mariners relief pitcher Gregory Santos (knee) left Wednesday's game against the division-rival Los Angeles Angels in the eighth inning after injuring his right knee. Santos had just given up a game-tying single to Willie Calhoun when he attempted to pick off pinch-runner Kevin Pillar. After getting the ball back on the mound, Santos stepped off the mound grimacing. Manager Scott Servais came out with the trainer to talk with Santos, who spent the conversation on the mound doubled over before he was pulled.

Santos was making just his fourth appearance of the season for the Mariners. The 24-year-old right-hander began the season on the injured list with a lat strain, and he didn't make his Seattle debut until July 9. The Mariners should lean on Andres Munoz and Ryne Stanek for the bulk of the high-leverage work out of the bullpen if Santos' absence extends beyond Wednesday.
