It's 2023 now. Time flies and all that—I don't know. The holidays have been busy so I don't have the time to think up something clever to write here, so let's just move on to the basketball.
These recommendations are mainly for 9-cat leagues, but if you play in another format, there's a good chance that the information here can still help you. We'll be looking at centers, forwards, and guards whose low rostership and upside make them ideal players to get onto your fantasy team. 9-Category Leagues - Waiver Wire Adds
This column is written based on H2H 9-category 12-team leagues. All players in this article are rostered at around 50 percent or less.
Immanuel Quickley, G - New York Knicks - 48% rostered
If Immanuel Quickley is still on the waiver wire in your league—and he is in over half of Yahoo! leagues, somehow—then GO. GET. HIM. NOW. Exit this article, add him, and then come back and see who else you should pick up.
Quickley has scored in double figures in seven consecutive games, but his last two games might be the piece de resistance for him: 36 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and five threes against the Spurs, followed by 27 points, five rebounds, seven assists, three steals and four threes against the Rockets. He also recently had a game with 15 assists.
With Jalen Brunson sidelined by a hip injury, Quickley is setting the NBA on fire.
Daniel Gafford, C - Washington Wizards - 36% rostered
Does your fantasy basketball team have a big hole when it comes to field goal percentage? If so, you need to take a look at Wizards center Daniel Gafford. Because, uhh...this is some efficiency, y'all. Here's his field goal percentage from each of the last seven games: 100%, 83.3%, 66.7%, 100%, 100%, 85.7%, 71.4%.
The volume isn't high, but you don't need a lot of volume when you're taking the kind of high-percentage shots that Gafford is. He also adds some good block numbers in, with multiple blocks in three of the last four games, including four of them last time out against the Magic, when he also had 11 points and eight boards.
T.J. Warren, F - Brooklyn Nets - 28% rostered
Warren's struggled a little with his shot over the last couple games, but before that he'd made multiple three-pointers in three consecutive outings. He's scored in double figures in four of the last five games and provides some solid rebounding numbers as well, with five or more boards in four of the past five as well. He should continue to fill the stat sheet up for the Nets.
Alec Burks, G/F - Detroit Pistons - 40% rostered
Burks has scored in double figures in four straight games, adding multiple threes in each of those as well, and four or more assists in three of those.
Burks' value won't stay high forever, but for now, he's carved out a nice-sized role off the bench. If you're looking for a hot hand with a good amount of positional versatility—he's listed at PG, SG and SF on Yahoo!—then Burks should definitely be on your radar.
Jeremy Sochan, F - San Antonio Spurs - 34% rostered
Sochan has been playing some pretty good basketball lately. On New Year's Eve, he scored 20 points in a one-point loss to Dallas, shooting 58.3% from the floor and adding six rebounds, two assists and one steal. He also drained two threes, though his three-point shooting isn't something fantasy managers should be counting on, as he'd made zero in the four previous contests.
The Spurs aren't a very good basketball team. But when it comes to Sochan, that's good for his value, because the Spurs have the room to get him out on the floor and let him figure things out.
Joe Ingles, F - Milwaukee Bucks - 15% rostered
Not going to lie here: I kind of forgot about Joe Ingles. The Australian forward finally returned from his ACL tear and he's immediately carved out a role off the bench for Milwaukee, culminating in this fascinating stat line last time out: 14 points, five rebounds, 10 assists and four threes in 24 minutes of action.
Ingles won't light the world on fire, but he's on the waiver wire in over 80% of leagues, so if you need threes and assists, you should definitely give him a look. Maybe this last game will wind up being a fluke, but he's really the perfect kind of role player for this Bucks team, so I'd imagine he keeps playing 20-25 minutes per night.
