J.D. Martinez Resting In Series-Opener Against The A's
3 years agoBoston Red Sox designated hitter J.D. Martinez is not in the starting lineup on Friday against the Oakland Athletics. It appears to be just a normal day of rest for one of baseball's best hitters in 2021. Martinez has made up for his bad 2020 season and then some, slashing .305/.372/.563 with 17 round-trippers and 55 RBI in 76 games to this point. The 33-year-old is hitting .304 (7-for-23) with three homers and nine RBI in the last week. Rafael Devers will serve as the DH on Friday, while Marwin Gonzalez will slot in at third base and hit sixth against A's right-hander Frankie Montas. The 32-year-old switch-hitter is hitting .211 on the season with just two home runs, but he is 9-for-30 (.300) in his last nine games. Gonzalez has been better against left-handed pitchers this year, but he's not the worst low-cost DFS play in an incredibly hot Red Sox offense.
