Browns Plan to Keep Four Quarterbacks
Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett (hamstring), Dillon Gabriel, and Shedeur Sanders (oblique) on their 53-man roster, Mary Kay Cabot of Cleveland.com reports. This was the likely outcome all along, as Flacco and Pickett were expected to compete for the starting role this summer, while the two rookies - Gabriel and Sanders - would serve as developmental pieces behind them. Flacco is indeed the starter heading into Week 1 against the Cincinnati Bengals on Sept. 7, but Pickett didn't get a chance to push for the job after suffering a hamstring injury early in camp. He just returned to 11-on-11 drills on Wednesday. Barring any setbacks, Pickett should go into the season as the Browns' QB2. The third spot is up in the air between Gabriel, a third-round pick, and the fifth-rounder Sanders. While both signal-callers have impressed in preseason action, Sanders has been slowed of late with an oblique injury. He's expected to follow Flacco and Gabriel in Saturday's preseason finale against the Los Angeles Rams.
