Anthony Volpe Unlikely to Start Against Red Sox
Anthony Volpe (shoulder) is unlikely to start any game during this weekend's series at Boston, as he is working on gaining strength in his injured shoulder. It was revealed earlier this week that the 24-year-old has been playing through a partially torn labrum for months. He recently had a cortisone shot injected into his ailing shoulder, with the hope and belief that he can play again this season. While there is a chance that he could be used off the bench, even that would be because of an emergency, said Yankees manager Aaron Boone. Volpe has had a disappointing season, sporting a .206/.266/.393 slash line this year, albeit with 19 home runs and 16 steals. It remains to be seen if and when he will be used down the stretch, and even when he does play, chances are his production takes a hit, given his ongoing injury. In his absence, Jose Caballero figures to get the bulk share of opportunities to play.
