Dave Funnell - RotoBaller

44 articles

Husband - Father - Teacher - Baseball Nut I've been following baseball since a child, but as it stands, I don't have a favorite team. While that might sound a bit odd, it helps take the emotion out of it when I'm figuring out who to add or drop. I have been playing fantasy baseball for almost twenty years. I got into writing about it about ten years ago, and have been reporting news and analyzing data ever since. While I love everything about it, my true passion and strength comes from studying, reporting, and speculating on injuries. I've written on many sites, such as PitcherList, Fantrax, and of course, Rotoballer, and have also helped host a podcast called "The Fantasy Baseball Beat". Other than baseball, I enjoy fantasy football, NBA basketball, and....cough cough....WWE wrestling (for my kids, of course;)). You can follow me on Twitter/X at @sportz_nutt51. My DM's are always open for anything you'd like to talk about. Also, I use the hashtag #FunnellVision for all major injury updates.

It's worth noting that this potential […]

Anthony Volpe Unlikely to Start Against Red Sox

New York Yankees shortstop Anthony Volpe (shoulder) is unlikely to start any game during this weekend's series at Boston, as he is working on gaining strength in his injured shoulder. It was revealed earlier this week that the 24-year-old has been playing through a partially torn labrum for months. He recently had a cortisone shot […]

Lourdes Gurriel Jr. to Have Surgery

Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Lourdes Gurriel Jr. (knee) will undergo surgery to repair a torn ACL in his right knee. Reese Olson Begins Throwing Progression

Detroit Tigers starting pitcher Reese Olson (shoulder) has begun a return-to-play throwing progression. The 26-year-old went to the injured list at the end of […]

Corey Seager Hopeful to Return this Season

Texas Rangers shortstop Corey Seager (appendix) is hopeful that he will be able to return to the team this season. He underwent an appendectomy on August 28, and the belief at the time was that he would require most, if not all, of the remainder of the season from which to recover. However, on Friday, […]

Kyle Tucker Remains Out on Saturday

Chicago Cubs outfielder Kyle Tucker (calf) remained out of the lineup on Saturday, as he continues to work through a lingering calf injury. Manager Craig Counsell said before the game that the team believes they have time to let it heal on its own without utilizing the injured list. He emphasized that they will be […]

Liam Hendriks Continues Throwing Program

Boston Red Sox reliever Liam Hendriks (hip) has continued progressing through his throwing program. The 36-year-old has increased his throwing distance up to 105 feet and hopes to extend that even further to 120 feet on August 30. If all goes well, he could work his way to throwing from a mound shortly afterward, as […]

Tyler Stephenson Takes Batting Practice

Cincinnati Reds catcher Tyler Stephenson (thumb) successfully took batting practice on Friday. He also did some catching drills, which included taking pitches and blocking balls. He did so using a specially fitted glove that had a thumb guard built into it for added protection. The plan is for him to continue along this upward trend […]

Tyler O'Neill Hopes to Swing a Bat This Weekend

Baltimore Orioles outfielder Tyler O'Neill (wrist) recently received an injection in his injured right wrist. The hope is that he will feel good enough to begin swinging a bat this weekend, as he continues to work his way back from inflammation in his wrist. O'Neill hasn't played since August 5, when he exited a game […]

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Taking Cautious Approach to Return

Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (hamstring) tested his sore left hamstring on Friday for the first time since injuring it. Alek Manoah has his Rehab Extended

Toronto Blue Jays right-handed pitcher Alek Manoah (elbow) has had his minor-league rehab assignment extended by 10 days. He was set to return after his 30-day window for his rehab had expired. Nick Lodolo on Pace to Return This Week

Cincinnati Reds starting pitcher Nick Lodolo (finger) successfully threw three simulated innings on Aug. 22 and is now on pace to return from the injured list and start on Aug. 27 in Los Angeles against the Dodgers. The 27-year-old last pitched on Aug. 4, when a blister developed early in a game against the Chicago […]

Tyler Stephenson Being Fitted for Thumb Guard

Cincinnati Reds catcher Tyler Stephenson (thumb) has been getting himself fitted for a padded thumb guard for his fractured thumb. This guard will then be inserted inside the catcher's mitt, as the team believes that he can play again this season. The 29-year-old catcher suffered an injury to his thumb on August 8, and then […]

Marcus Semien has Inconclusive MRI

Texas Rangers second baseman Marcus Semien (foot) was held out of action on Friday, after X-ray imaging came back negative on his left foot contusion. Kutter Crawford Hopes to be Throwing by October

Boston Red Sox starter Kutter Crawford (wrist) is recovering well from the surgery that he had on his right wrist back on July 2, which was a procedure that ended his season. He anticipates that he will be throwing by October, leading to the hope that he will be ready by Spring Training. It has […]

Carlos Narvaez Battling Knee Soreness

Boston Red Sox catcher Carlos Narvaez (knee) has been battling knee soreness of late, which is the reason for his absence from the lineup earlier in the week. While he did return to play on Friday night, he was absent from Saturday's lineup, giving way to the possibility that he could be fatigued or still […]

Tanner Houck to Have Tommy John Surgery on Monday

Boston Red Sox right-handed pitcher Tanner Houck (elbow) is scheduled to undergo Tommy John Surgery on Monday. The 29-year-old suffered a right flexor pronator strain in the middle of May and has been on the Injured List ever since. He had been making gains in the summer, going so far as to complete a long […]

Justin Slaten to Throw to Live Batters on Monday

Boston Red Sox right-hander reliever Justin Slaten (shoulder) is scheduled to take a big step forward on Monday, as he is set to face live batters for the first time since landing on the injured list in June. Fernando Cruz to Throw to Live Batters on Sunday

New York Yankees right-handed reliever Fernando Cruz (oblique) is set to throw a live bullpen session on Sunday at Double-A Somerset. Justin Lawrence is Throwing Side Sessions

Pittsburgh Pirates relief pitcher Justin Lawrence (elbow) has begun throwing side sessions and has been transferred to the team's Florida complex. If things go smoothly without […]

Erik Miller has Mixed Results in First Rehab Appearance

San Francisco Giants reliever Erik Miller (elbow) made his first appearance in a rehab game on Friday, appearing in the fifth inning for Triple-A Sacramento. Mark Canha Hits Grand Slam in First Rehab Game

Kansas City Royals outfielder Mark Canha (elbow) began his rehab assignment with Double-A Northwest Arkansas in a big way, finishing 2-for-4 and hitting a grand slam in the process. Bryce Teodosio Feeling Better after Leaving Game Early on Friday

Los Angeles Angels' outfielder Bryce Teodosio (head) left Friday night's game after colliding with the outfield wall in the third inning. Tanner Houck Unlikely to Return this Season

Boston Red Sox right-handed pitcher Tanner Houck (elbow), who was recently transferred to the 60-day injured list, is unlikely to return to the team in 2025.
