Angels, Shohei Ohtani Avoid Arbitration
4 years agoThe Los Angeles Angels avoided salary arbitration with starting pitcher/designated hitter Shohei Ohtani on Monday by agreeing to a two-year, $8.5 million deal. Ohtani will make $3 million in 2021 and $5.5 million in 2022. The two-way star filed for $3.3 million and the Angels offered him $2.5 million, so the deal comes in a little above the midpoint for this season. Reports on the Japanese right-handed pitcher's rehab from elbow surgery have him doing really well, and the Angels expect him to be part of the rotation this year while also serving as the designated hitter on a part-time basis. The 26-year-old was the American League Rookie of the Year in 2018 when he hit .285 with 22 home runs, 61 RBI and 10 steals while also going 4-2 with a 3.31 ERA and 1.16 WHIP in 10 starts on the mound. But injuries have slowed him down the last several seasons. Ohtani has lots of upside as a late-round pick at a current ADP of 235 for the potential with his right arm and his power/speed combination at the plate.
