ANALYSIS: The Green Bay Packers made a big splash in the opening round of the 2025 NFL Draft by adding Texas standout Matthew Golden. This was the first time the team took a wide receiver in the opening round in nearly two decades.
During his final collegiate season, Golden caught a career-high 58 passes for 987 yards. During this season, Golden led the SEC in receiving touchdowns (9) and averaged a strong 17.0 YPR.
While Golden was already expected to have a significant role as a rookie, the Green Packers' wide receiver room is currently dealing with multiple injuries, which could push Golden to the top spot on the depth chart much earlier than expected. Currently, Christian Watson (knee) is on the injured reserve, Dontayvion Wicks (calf) is questionable, and Jayden Reed (foot) has repeatedly suffered a Jones fracture.
While both Wicks and Reed can suit up in their Week 1 matchup against the Lions, both could be limited.
As a result, Golden has the opportunity to operate as a full-time starter in a potent high-scoring affair against the Detroit Lions. According to DraftKings Sportsbook, this game carries a hefty 46.5 point total, which is one of the highest marks on the Week 1 slate.
Given his expected hefty target share in a potential shootout, Golden should be viewed as a WR3 with upside in Week 1.
