Is Trey Benson Out for the 2025 Season?
On November 19, Benson logged his first limited practice since getting injured. With his practice window having opened, that meant he had to return to the active roster within 21 days—or never return for the rest of the season.
Benson did not practice on Wednesday, which makes his prospects for returning against the Los Angeles Rams in Week 14 look bleak. It was the third straight day of practice he missed after aggravating his knee injury. If he does not return this week, he'll have to make it in Week 15 if the Cardinals want him to take the field again.
They sorely need him. In two of their past three games, their leading running back was held to under 30 yards. Benson has been leading the team in rushing yards per game, with 40.0, and has a healthy 5.5 yards per carry.
Cardinals coach Jonathan Gannon was non-committal as to whether Benson would play against the Rams, according to Theo Mackie of The Arizona Republic. At 3-9, the Cardinals have already been eliminated from playoff contention. It wouldn't make sense for the team to rush Benson back and risk further injury when they have nothing to play for.
However, Arizona Sports 98.7 talk show hosts Dave Burns and John Gambadoro make the case that seeing more of Benson in his second season could help the team evaluate its options at the RB position heading into the offseason.
Trey Benson 2025 Fantasy Football Outlook
Trey Benson would be tough to start in Week 14 even if he returns, as he faces a tough L.A. Rams defense. The Rams have only allowed two total touchdowns to opposing running backs and have allowed the third-fewest fantasy points to the position.
Week 15 isn't much better matchupwise. The Houston Texans allow the fourth-fewest rushing yards per game and the fewest total yards. Moreover, Benson would probably be eased in.

But if Benson is available for Week 16 and 17, he could help some teams win their fantasy playoffs. His matchups in the final two weeks of December are against the Atlanta Falcons and the Cincinnati Bengals respectively. Both teams rank in the bottom eleven in terms of defending the RB position. The Bengals are the best overall matchup for RBs.
It's not just the box score numbers that look bad enough. The analytics show the Bengals and Falcons can't stop the run. The Bengals are allowing the second-most estimated points per play, and the Falcons are not far behind at fifth-worst.
Benson might be the best Cardinals running back if healthy. He is averaging 5.5 yards per carry, which is more than every other Arizona RB except for Emari Demercado, but Demercado's numbers on 31 carries are being propped up by two runs of over 50 yards.
On a play-to-play basis, Demercado only made successful runs 41.9% of the time. Benson's PFF rushing grade (62.1) is considerably higher than Demercado's (52.6). Benson's yards after contact per attempt figure is higher than those of Bam Knight, Michael Carter, and James Conner, who is out for the season.
