Is Kyler Murray Out for the 2025 Season?
After missing three weeks, Murray was placed on the injured reserve following the Cardinals' Week 9 win over the Dallas Cowboys. That move fueled questions about Murray's status for the rest of the season and his future in Arizona.
Murray is working to return. "He's in every meeting, and he's engaged. He's rehabbing a boatload of time in there," head coach Jonathan Gannon said this week.
The first game he would be eligible to play would be the Cardinals' Week 14 matchup against the division rival Los Angeles Rams. If they lose this week, they will be eliminated from playoff contention.
There have been conflicting reports about whether Murray will start when he returns. An interview head coach Jeff Gannon did ahead of Week 10 received a lot of attention. Gannon told Arizona Sports 98.7 FM that Murray would be the QB2 if he was active against the Seattle Seahawks.
Some took that to mean Murray had been benched in favor of Jacoby Brissett, who was (and still is) playing well. However, it is also possible that Gannon simply did not want to rush Murray back before he was 100%. As it happened, Murray was put on the IR, so he didn't play anyway.

Regarding the controversy, Gannon said, "Nothing's changed on that," indicating that Murray remained the QB1 on the depth chart.
Kyler Murray 2025 Fantasy Football Outlook
Murray's passing statistics had been underwhelming in the first five games of the season. He averaged just 192.4 yards per game, 6.0 yards per attempt, and 8.7 yards per completion, all of which would be the worst numbers of his career. For multiple years, Murray has been unable to build on the promise he showed early in his career. His best season for yardage and touchdowns was in 2020.
A strong rushing ability adds to Murray's fantasy viability, although it still does not make him a QB1. Murray's rushing production has remained stable since 2021, which is somewhat impressive considering his age (28) and his injury history.
Before he went down, Murray was averaging 34.6 yards per game on the ground, his highest in the past three years, and 6.0 yards per carry. With the Cardinals' offense being weak overall, he had only scored one rushing touchdown.
If he returns in Week 14, he'll face the Los Angeles Rams, one of the tougher defenses in the league. The Rams have made 12 interceptions, and they are allowing the fifth-fewest fantasy points to QBs.
His Week 15 matchup is even worse. The Houston Texans are allowing the third-fewest passing yards per game and the fewest overall fantasy points to QBs. Even his Week 16 matchup against the Atlanta Falcons is not a strong start, as the Falcons are allowing the tenth-fewest points to QBs.
However, Murray gets a great matchup for Week 17, the traditional championship week, as the Cardinals take on one of the worst defenses in the league, the Cincinnati Bengals. The Bengals have allowed the second-most passing touchdowns, the fourth-most passing yards, and third-most fantasy points to QBs.
If you have a strong lineup overall and spots to spare on your bench or your IR, and if you are expecting to make a playoff run, then it would be worth it to stash Murray for when you need him.
