Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert was playing "MVP-caliber" football in the first half, including throwing for over 300 yards and three touchdowns in a Week 1 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs. Throughout his first seven games, Herbert averaged just over 270 passing yards per game and held a 13:6 TD:INT.
But as often happens with Herbert, he suffered injuries, and the quality of his play became inconsistent. Heading into a Week 14 Monday Night Football game, he is dealing with a hand injury.

Justin Herbert Fantasy Football Injury Update
Herbert suffered a left hand fracture in Week 13 when he was tackled by a group of Las Vegas Raiders players, including edge rusher Maxx Crosby. He had to miss a couple of plays, but that didn't prevent the Chargers from winning 31-14. Herbert completed 15-of-20 passes for 151 yards, two touchdowns, and just one interception.
After having surgery on Monday, Herbert has been planning on playing against the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday Night Football. His left hand will be in a cast. While his left is his non-throwing hand, the injury will affect his ability to take handoffs.

An unsteady grip could lead to more fumbles and awkward handoffs on runs to the right. Quarterbacks usually use their left hand to give the ball to the halfback when he runs to the right, but Herbert will have to get the exchange done with his right hand.
Former Raiders quarterback and NFL on CBS analyst Rich Gannon said in an interview with the Los Angeles Times that the Eagles might put extra effort into trying to strip Herbert of the football. “The team you’re playing will say, ‘He’s only got one hand. He can’t grip the ball that well. Let’s come down there with two violent arms and see if we can get that ball out," he said.
Herbert was limited in practice all week, but he has said all along that he plans on playing, and all signs point to him playing. If you roster Herbert, you should also pick up Trey Lance if he is available. Check the game inactives at approximately 6:45 pm EST to confirm if Herbert is playing.
Justin Herbert Fantasy Football Injury Impact
Herbert's production has dropped off somewhat in the second half of the season. In Weeks 1-7, he averaged 273.3 yards per game, 1.9 touchdowns, and 0.9 interceptions, with a 67.5% completion rate. Since then, he's averaging 185.8 yards per game, 1.6 touchdowns, 0.8 interceptions, and a 65.6% completion percentage.

He threw for 300 or more yards in three games in the first half, including one 420-yard game, but he hasn't eclipsed 250 yards since Week 7. In the past two games, he had to sit out some plays because of injury concerns and because those games were blowouts. He attempted 20 or fewer passes in each game.
Given his injured hand, the Chargers will likely try to limit his play count in this game. The more often he is pressured, the more likely he is to aggravate the injury.
The Chargers' opponent, the Philadelphia Eagles, ranks No. 18 with 218.3 passing yards allowed per game. Game dynamics have resulted in Eagles opponents throwing the ball more often than running. Still, the Chargers might stick to a different game script, especially if their star rookie running back Omarion Hampton is back.
Herbert ranks as RotoBaller's QB16 in Week 16. He'd be an underwhelming starter in 12-team single-QB leagues, but he's a viable QB2 starter at the superflex position. If you are considering starting Herbert at this point, you basically have to start him. If you happen to have Jalen Hurts on your roster, he is a better choice.
