The 10 Best Rookie Seasons in NFL History

The NFL Draft is coming up at the end of the month. A number of rookies will come into the NFL and make an immediate impact, while others will struggle to get going.

But will any player rank among the best rookies ever in the NFL? We've seen some great performances from first-year players in the history of professional football, so it'll be tough for anyone from the 2024 NFL Draft to grab a spot on this list of the top players.

Let's rank the 10 best rookie seasons in NFL history.

10. Robert Griffin III, 2012

Oh, what could have been. As a rookie with Washington, Robert Griffin III was electric -- a future star in the making. He completed 65.3% of his passes for 3,200 yards with 20 touchdown passes and five interceptions. His ability to protect the football as a rookie was huge, as his 1.3% interception rate led the entire NFL.

Then there were RGIII's contributions on the ground, as he had 120 carries for 815 yards and seven touchdowns. His 6.8 yards per attempt led the league. But late in his rookie year, the injury concerns began. Griffin's knee was initially hurt in Week 14; then in the playoffs, he tore his LCL and ACL. He was never the same player again.

We'll always have that stellar rookie campaign, though. For that one year, Griffin was magic.

9. Devin Hester, 2006

There's probably never going to be a return man like Devin Hester again. And if there is one with a career that looks like Hester's, there definitely won't be one with a rookie campaign that touches what Hester did in 2006 with the Chicago Bears.

While Hester was a nonentity on offense, where he failed to bring in his only target, he was a huge weapon when he touched the ball on special teams, leading the league in both kick return and punt return touchdowns. Altogether, Hester found the end zone five times as a returner.

8. Micah Parsons, 2021

Dallas Cowboys linebacker Micah Parsons was a destructive force the moment he touched an NFL field. The Penn State product was the Defensive Rookie of the Year and finished second in the Defensive Player of the Year voting in his debut season.

Parsons finished that first season with 13.0 sacks and 30 QB hits. He recorded 84 tackles, including 64 solo tackles. Parsons also forced three fumbles and had three passes defensed.

7. Jevon Kearse, 1999

It's fair to say that Jevon Kearse peaked as a rookie. With the Titans in 1999, Kearse forced an NFL-best eight fumbles and recorded 14.5 sacks, which would turn out to be the best mark of his entire NFL career. He was first-team All-Pro that season, his only appearance on an All-Pro team.

Kearse wasn't bad after his rookie season. He hung around the NFL for 11 years and had two more double-digit sack campaigns. However, injuries zapped some of what made him so special during his first three seasons.

6. Randy Moss, 1998

Randy Moss led the NFL in receiving touchdowns five times during his NFL career, which includes 17 of them as a rookie in 1998 with the Minnesota Vikings. Moss caught 69 passes for 1,313 yards that season.

The former Marshall star finished third in the MVP voting that year, the highest he ever finished. He also made the first of his four first-team All-Pro appearances. Moss was one of the greatest wide receivers in NFL history, so it makes sense that he had one of the greatest rookie seasons ever as well.

5. C.J. Stroud, 2023

Is this too high for the reigning NFL Rookie of the Year? Maybe! But C.J. Stroud was incredible in 2023, leading a Texans team that won three games the previous year to a 10-win season and a playoff victory over the Browns.

Stroud completed 63.9% of his passes as a rookie, throwing for 4,108 yards and 23 touchdowns. He was picked off five times, with his 1.0% interception percentage leading the NFL and his 273.9 passing yards per game pacing the league as well.

4. Ja'Marr Chase, 2021

While Randy Moss had a great rookie season, Ja'Marr Chase just edges him out for the title of best rookie wide receiver of all time. In 2021, the former LSU star caught 81 passes for 1,455 yards and 13 touchdowns for the Bengals. He was fourth among wide receivers that season in yardage.

Chase's season is only third all-time when it comes to rookie receiving yards. Puka Nacua set the record in 2023 and arguably deserves a spot on this list, while Bill Groman sits second after his 1,473 yards with the Oilers in 1960.

3. Lawrence Taylor, 1981

Lawrence Taylor is one of the most devastating pass-rushers in league history and that was apparent right away when he won Defensive Player of the Year as a rookie. He'd go on to win the award again in his second NFL season.

In that debut campaign for the G-Men, Taylor recorded 9.5 sacks. The NFL didn't keep track of tackles back then, but unofficially he had 133 of them that season.

2. Gale Sayers, 1965

Gale Sayers had a short NFL career, lasting just seven seasons with the Bears. While his rookie campaign wasn't his best, it was still a very good year. Sayers had 1,374 scrimmage yards and 20 touchdowns that season, with 14 on the ground and six more in the passing game.

Oh, and he also added two return touchdowns as well. And if we add in the return yardage, we get 2,272 all-purpose yards, which set an NFL record at that time. Sayers was unstoppable that season, scoring six touchdowns in a single game at one point.

1. Jim Brown, 1957

Only one rookie has ever won the NFL MVP, so of course we have to put that player at the top of the list, even if he might not have had the best statistical performance of the players on this list. Brown finished with 942 rushing yards as a rookie with nine touchdowns.

Those numbers might not sound like much, but both of them led the league that season. Brown won the first of his three AP MVP awards that season and the Browns played in the NFL Championship, where they lost to the Detroit Lions.
