LIV Golf Betting Picks - 2023 Greenbrier

patrick reed PGA DFS lineup picks daily fantasy golf advice betting

Matt Miller's LIV golf betting picks and betting strategies for 2023 Greenbrier event at the Old White Course. He digs into the LIV golf betting lines to find the best bets and top values.

The LIV Golf League will hold this week’s event at The Greenbrier, in White Sulfur Springs, West Virginia. The Old White Course at The Greenbrier hosted a PGA Tour event, The Greenbrier Classic/ A Military Tribute at The Greenbrier, from 2010 to 2019. The tournament was cancelled in 2016 due to the flood but resumed play in 2017. The Old White course has been consistently rated as one of the best courses in the state of West Virginia.

While in the rotation on the PGA Tour, 27 current LIV members competed at this course from 2010-2019. Joaquin Niemann (2019), Kevin Na (2018), and Danny Lee (2015) have all won at the Old White Course. Bubba Watson has never won at this course but does have a home at The Greenbrier and made this event an annual stop on his schedule.

The event will be played Friday-Sunday and will air on the CW Network in 100% of U.S. markets, as well as the CW App and LIV Golf Plus. Globally the event will be broadcasted in over 160 international territories Live and On-Demand, free of charge, via LIV Golf Plus.

LIV Golf Greenbrier Course Breakdown

Below is the official round one scorecard provided by LIV Golf.

Hole 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 Out
Par 4 4 3 4 4 4 4 3 4 34
Yardage 449 446 208 430 388 475 390 236 413 3435
Hole 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 In
Par 4 4 5 4 4 3 4 5 3 36
Yardage 354 484 570 496 395 175 507 615 170 3766

The Old White Course at The Greenbrier first opened for play in 1914, designed by Charles Blair MacDonald. The course was named after the Old White Hotel, which was on the grounds of the club from 1958 to 1922. The Old White Course was damaged in 2016 by a flood and was reopened and fully restored in 2017. The course will play as a 7,201-yard par-70 with bent grass greens according to the official LIV round one scorecard.

Five of the nine years a PGA Tour event was played at The Greenbrier, the winner had a score of -16 or better. Stuart Appleby’s -22 winning score in 2010 was the lowest in tournament history. Joaquin Niemann missed the mark by one shot when he hoisted the trophy in 2019, winning at -21. While the course should be a fun viewing experience for fans, it will not be an overly difficult test for the players.

The course is not very long, and the fairways were historically easy to hit while the course was a part of the PGA rotation. Players should be able to bomb away, and the event could turn into a wedge fest. I expect birdies to be plentiful and to see a winning score well into the teens under par.

LIV Golf Betting Strategy & Selections - Greenbrier

This week I am forming my card a little different than usual. I am taking two big names up top who I believe have the ability to go low. This event should be a birdie fest and I am looking for elite birdie makers when forming my card this week. Rather than spread the card around with a few guys in the mid-range, I believe the best option is to go heavy toward the top and add in one potential bomb to round out the small card.

Patrick Reed +1400

It is pretty remarkable that Patrick Reed has yet to win a LIV Golf event. He has eight top-five finishes across his first two seasons as a member of the LIV Golf League. Reed is coming off back-to-back top-five LIV finishes in London and Spain, and a T33 at the Open Championship a few weeks ago. He’s one of the most consistent players in the league and seems due to finally get one across the finish line for a win.

Reed played at The Greenbrier four times in his PGA Tour career, making three of four cuts, with three top-30 finishes in each of his made cuts. Having not only prior knowledge of the course, but a solid track record is a great start to Reed’s case to win this week. There’s also a ton to like about the state of his current game at this course. As noted in the course description, I’m expecting tons of birdies this week and the winner getting to a low number by the end of the weekend. Patrick Reed fits that mold, ranking fifth in the LIV Golf League this season in total birdies.

When you think about the part of Reed’s game that has historically let him down, it’s the driver. With easier than average fairways to hit, this won’t be an issue we need to worry about this week. If the putter can get going this week for the 32-year-old, I think it’s time he finally takes home his first LIV Golf win.

Joaquin Niemann +1800

There’s really no way around it, it’s been a tough year on the course for Joaquin Niemann. That said, I still believe he can turn it around. It should be noted that off the course, Niemann has had a very successful year (depending on who you ask), as he is a newly engaged man. This week, the 24-year-old Chilean is heading back to The Greenbrier, a place where he had resounding success during his time on the PGA Tour. In three trips to The Old White Course, Niemann has finished 29th, 5th and 1st. Hard to beat that track record.

While his game isn’t in the best form right now, the course still sets up nicely for him. He should be able to grip it and rip it off the tee with no concerns. As a top-five driver in terms of distance in the LIV Golf League in 2023, Niemann should be hitting plenty of wedges into greens and giving himself good birdie looks. I’m hoping that with his good history of putting on these Old White Course greens, Niemann will see a few drop and get on a roll this week. The talent is surely there for him, it’s just a matter of putting it all together this week.

Richard Bland +8000

I can't say I was fully expecting to land on Richard Bland this week but let's face it, the guy has been playing some solid golf. Bland finished T33 at the Open Championship his last time teeing it up and is coming off his best LIV finish of the season in London. Bland's last four starts in the LIV Golf League are three T23 finishes and a T6. On the surface, it's nothing crazy but it is a sign of consistent golf.

Frankly, I'm not sure if Bland has the firepower to go low enough to win this event, but at +8000 I'll take a shot. Bland ranks inside the top half of the LIV Golf League in total birdies this year and made six birdies in round one of the Open Championship in his last start. Bland isn't the longest hitter but he also doesn't need to be to win at The Greenbrier. HIs putting has drastically improved since the start of 2023 and he's going to need to lean on that this week if he wants to win.
