LIV Golf Betting Picks - 2023 Singapore

The LIV Golf League heads to Singapore this week, fresh off their most successful event yet in Australia. LIV will hold this week’s event at Sentosa Golf Club, in Singapore. The Serapong course is as scenic a course as you will find with the Sentosa ports and business district as the backdrop for several holes. It is currently ranked 55th in Golf Digest’s World’s 100 Greatest Courses. It was ranked the top course in Singapore and one of the top courses in all of Asia.

The Sentosa Golf Club will play as a 7406-yard par-71. Sentosa has two courses, the Serapong will be used for this week’s event. The Serapong opened in 1982 and has undergone two major renovations, in 2006 and again in 2020. Sentosa Golf Club hosted the Singapore Open from 2005 until 2022, nearly half the field this week has played here before in those events. Sergio Garcia and Ian Poulter both have won the Singapore Open at Sentosa.

The winning score of the Singapore Open has ranged from -8 to -18, over four rounds. I do expect birdies to be out there this week although the event should be far from a birdie fest. I do not see anyone putting up back-to-back -10 rounds like we saw from Talor Gooch last week. Holes 3-7 will challenge players this week. The stretch is known as the Dragon’s Tail. It contains several long par 4s, including the longest on the course in hole 3, and a few risk/reward par-5s.

LIV Golf Singapore Course Breakdown

Below is the official round one scorecard provided by LIV Golf.

Hole 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 Out
Par 4 3 4 5 4 4 5 3 4 36
Yardage 427 168 495 587 468 444 587 216 452 3862
Hole 10 11 12 13 14 15 16 17 18 In
Par 4 4 4 4 3 4 4 3 5 35
Yardage 402 412 493 450 202 428 412 182 563 3544

Due to the length of the course, I would expect longer hitters to have an advantage this week. Ian Poulter has won the Singapore Open here so I won’t count anyone out entirely, but I do believe shorter hitters will have far less margin for error this week. I will be taking a long look at how guys have performed off the tee going into this week. I will also be looking at putting.

Much of the talk surrounding the course renovations has been around the green complexes. It has been noted that they were made far more challenging during the renovations. Several holes have pin locations that are tucked and as a result players will not be able to go directly at pins. This puts an emphasis on putting this week. While putting is a volatile stat week to week and among the hardest to predict, I will be looking for guys that have been trending in the right direction with the putter and who have been showing an ability to make birdies.

LIV Golf Betting Strategy & Selections - Singapore

Talor Gooch absolutely dominated last week, taking a ten stroke lead into the final round. That pretty much ruled out any chance of a victory for non-Gooch backers.

That said, it was another top-end player that won an event. I think the correct strategy to employ is continuing to take one of the top players, a mid-range guy (20/1-50/1) , and a longshot (50/1+).

Dustin Johnson +1400

This week I am starting my card by going back to DJ. Dustin Johnson is coming off a solo 10th-place finish last week in Australia. Despite back-to-back top-10 finishes for Johnson, he has yet to truly contend in an event this year. This is a bit odd given his domination in the individual points race last year.

That said, Johnson admitted he took a ton of time off by design to enjoy the offseason and then had to WD from his start at the Saudi International in January because of back discomfort. He had far fewer reps than a majority of the league going into the season and the rust showed. It is encouraging to see Johnson continue to improve and show signs of finding his old form.

The putter was a main concern for 4 Aces captain earlier in the year, which caused him to switch putters last week in Australia. With the new Scotty Cameron putter in the bag, Johnson finished 3rd in the field in total birdies and top-10 in putting. He also finished top-five in the week on fairways hit and driving distance. I think all signs point to DJ getting back on the podium with a win sooner rather than later.

Sergio Garcia +2200

Sergio has been a mixed bag so far this year in LIV Golf League results. He finished T11 last week in Adelaide and T6 in Tucson but was terrible in Orlando and average in Mayakoba. Sergio will no doubt be looking to find his consistency again and this is a great spot for him to start. In three appearances at Sentosa, Garcia has won and never finished worse than T11.

The Fireballs captain had a fantastic year last year in the LIV Golf League, despite not winning an event. He recorded four top-nine finishes in the final five events of the season last year. As a historically great ball striker, I think the set up this week favors him far more than last week’s course. If Sergio is accurate enough with his driver, he should have no problem with the distance of the course and has a history of putting well on these greens.

I believe this is as favorable a number as you will find for Sergio in a LIV event.

Phil Mickelson +5000

Lefty is back! He spoke about how good of a spot he felt his game was in during Masters week and backed it up with an incredible finish at Augusta. While his 16th-place finish last week looked pedestrian on the leaderboard, there were a ton of positives to take away from it.

Mickelson led the field in birdies and total putts. He was almost last in fairways hit. To be able to lead the field in birdies despite not hitting fairways is an impressive feat for Phil. If he has more accuracy with the driver this week, I expect the bridies to continue to come.

With how well he’s playing lately and the confidence he has found in his game, 50-1 honestly feels like a pretty good number on Phil. He has some experience playing this course and I expect him to hang around the leaderboard again this weekend.
