The New Orleans Saints finished the 2022 season with both a 7-10 record, and have a lot of work to do in the offseason. One of their first priorities will be deciding who will be their quarterback, the most important position in sports.

Andy Dalton, a veteran who has played in 166 games in his career, was the team's starter this past season. He is now a free agent, and fantasy owners want to know if he'll resign and remain the Saints' starting QB.

Is Andy Dalton The Saints' Starting Quarterback in 2023?

After signing a one-year, three-million-dollar contract with the team in 2022, Dalton now enters free agency. He will be available to any teams that are in dire need of quarterback help. However, he will have competition as there is a long list of available QBs.

Is it a smart move for the Saints to bring him back in 2023? The "Red Rifle" played in 14 games last season, throwing for 2,871 yards, 18 touchdowns, and tossing nine interceptions. It wasn't exactly a jaw-dropping campaign for the journeyman, leaving question marks about his future.

The 35-year-old certainly is good enough to play in the NFL but not for a contender looking to win a Super Bowl. He isn't a star, is well past his prime, and probably is best suited for a backup role with another franchise. If the Saints want to win now, they should move on and find an option with a higher upside in hopes of making the playoffs in 2023.

It has become clear over the past decade that the surefire way to win in the NFL is to have a star quarterback. Patrick Mahomes, Tom Brady, and Matthew Stafford have all proven that over the last few seasons. Luckily for Dalton, multiple teams this offseason will be in need of the services of a signal caller who has shown the ability to produce under center.

After being selected in the second round of the 2011 NFL Draft by the Cincinnati Bengals, Dalton has gone on to have a successful career. He has thrown for nearly 40,000 yards over the course of 166 games and passed for 244 touchdowns. He's no slouch, and definitely someone that can help a team in need.

Dalton has played for the Bengals, the Cowboys, the Bears, and most recently the Saints during his tenure in the NFL. Will he return to one of his former teams or find another home? The speculation is he may consider backing up Joe Burrow in Cincinnati, but only time will tell if the red-headed journeyman lands on his feet when it's all said and done.
