When is Cade Povich getting called up? Will Cade Povich play in June of this MLB season? Read about Cade Povich's debut date and fantasy baseball prospect updates for 2024.
As we stand today, the Baltimore Orioles have to be the most commendable organization in baseball. That's right, move over Dodgers, Rays, etc. as the Orioles not only boast one of the league's premier big league rosters but also the No. 1-ranked farm system in baseball, as per MLB Pipeline.
Recent graduates such as Gunnar Henderson and Adley Rutschman are among the best young players in the game while Jordan Westburg, Colton Cowser, and Kyle Stowers have made their mark at the big league level. The O's also have four of the top 21 prospects in baseball in their system, including consensus No. 1 Jackson Holliday. In short, the Orioles are set to be a powerhouse for many, many years to come.
This is precisely why left-hander Cade Povich, the team's No. 9-ranked prospect, has flown well under the radar. However, it may not be much longer before he makes an impact with the big club, so let's dive in and check on Povich's prospect status and fantasy baseball outlook for 2024.
Cade Povich Prospect Update for Fantasy Baseball
After a season in which he turned in a 5.04 ERA across 28 starts between Double-A and Triple-A, Povich has done his part in bouncing back to a 3.18 ERA alongside a big-time 32.5% K% across 11 starts so far this season, all with Triple-A Norfolk. Hefty punchout totals have been a staple throughout his minor league tenure but most encouraging this season has been an improvement in control by way of a 9.1% BB% that is significantly superior to his 14.7% clip in 10 Triple-A starts a season ago.
It just so happens that the Orioles' starting rotation just recently took a couple of significant blows as left-hander John Means will undergo his second Tommy John surgery while right-hander Tyler Wells awaits his first. Both pitchers will be out for the remainder of the season while missing a good chunk of the 2025 campaign as well.
#Orioles' rotation landscape as it stands:
1. Corbin Burnes
2. Kyle Bradish
3. Grayson Rodriguez
4. Cole Irvin
5. Albert SuárezDean Kremer (right triceps) on IL, but could return before end of June.

The Orioles have Albert Suarez and Kyle Bradish listed for Wednesday and Thursday's starts, respectively, and the club also added veteran Julio Teheran on a minor league pact on Tuesday. At the same time, it's going to be awfully difficult for the organization to ignore Povich, the team's minor league pitcher for the month for May, given the state of its rotation.
It would appear fantasy managers could expect a promotion sooner or later for the 24-year-old.
Cade Povich Outlook for Fantasy Baseball
Given his strikeout potential, Povich certainly jumps off the page as a prospect strongly worth considering for fantasy managers. Suspect run-prevention totals notwithstanding, Povich's improvement with his control could be a notable factor in the team's decision on when to promote the southpaw. After all, he did walk just 39 hitters across 114 innings in the 2022 season.
On The Verge #BabyBird of the day for 5/18:
LHP Cade Povich (NOR): 6 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 8 K
Season line for Povich:
47.2 IP
65 K/17 BB- Leads all of MiLB in K's
2.08 ERA

It's all about the punchout upside when it comes to Povich but the opportunity to contribute immediately to a decimated Orioles rotation with the backing of a premier offense owns plenty of appeal in itself. Fantasy managers in deeper leagues should consider a flier on the left-hander who could make his big league debut sooner than later.
