Week 7 Quarterbacks - Rankings & Matchups Analysis

Tom Brady has been doing bad, bad things to opposing teams since his return two weeks ago. He completely bowled over the Bengals and the Browns, throwing for an average 391 yards and three TDs per game, while completing 76% of his passes. This week his matchup isn’t so easy against the Steelers in Pittsburgh, who have allowed the 12th fewest fantasy points to opposing QBs. It’s tough to imagine anyone being able to stop Brady at this point however, given how utterly dominant he has been. Even in an uneasy matchup, he has the ability to overcome it and finish as the top QB this week.

Drew Brees on the other hand may not be able to overcome his matchup this week. Brees goes on the road to Kansas City this week to take on the Chiefs. His home/road splits are well documented, and things this season have not been any different for him. Though he has played one more game at home compared to on the road so far, the difference in his stats is extremely noticeable. He holds an 11:2 TD:INT ratio at home this season compared to 3:2 on the road. He has thrown for 1,264 yards at home (421 per game average) compared to 470 on the road (235 per game average). The Chiefs will get back LB Justin Houston this week also, which will help the defense overall. This matchup won’t be good for Brees, and the Chiefs defense will be a good play in fantasy this week.

Marcus Mariota has been on a roll the past two weeks after a slow start. He has two straight games with three passing TDs, while rushing for 60 yards or more in both games. This week he gets the Colts, who have given up the ninth most fantasy points to opposing QBs this season. They have allowed three straight QBs to pass for two TDs. Those QBs were Blake Bortles, Brian Hoyer, and Brock Osweiler; not exactly world-beaters at QB. This will be a great opportunity for Mariota to continue his solid stretch of games.

With LeSean McCoy looking unlikely to play and Robert Woods questionable, a lot will be put on the shoulders of Tyrod Taylor this week in Miami. He hasn’t put up big stats this season, but each week has done enough for the Bills to win and fantasy owners to be content. He has two straight games with two TD passes, and even rushed for 68 yards last week on eight attempts, his second highest rushing total of the season. Taylor will still have his deep threat in Marquise Goodwin, and Mike Gillislee has shown he can be a solid fill-in for Shady that can run and catch passes. The Bills need a win this week to keep pace with New England. Taylor will have a lot on his plate this week, but I believe he can rise to the challenge while putting up a solid fantasy day.

Russell Wilson used the Seahawks bye week to rest up a bit and heal his injured ankle, but the results last week against a weak Falcons secondary still weren’t very good. He completed 68% of his passes, throwing for 270 yards with no TDs. This week Seattle travels to Arizona, where a much tougher defense awaits them. Arizona has allowed the seventh fewest fantasy points to opposing QBs, holding them to a 5:8 TD:INT ratio on the season. Wilson has a tough first half of the season last year also before breaking loose in the second half, so fantasy owners will need to hope that is the case again this season. This week will be difficult for Wilson, but the Saints are up next meaning better times are ahead.

We should see a nice shootout this week between young franchise QBs Derek Carr and Blake Bortles. Carr has made great strides in his development this season, throwing for 1,608 yards to this point with 12 TDs. He is coming off his worst game of the season though against the Chiefs, who limited him t0 225 yards passing with a TD and an INT. Jacksonville is a much easier defense to face than KC, allowing the 12th most fantasy points to the QB position. The Raiders defense has been even worse, allowing the fifth most points to opposing QBs. Bortles has had some troubles with his offensive line, but has still thrown for 1,321 yards on the season. While he is prone to throwing some picks (seven on the season) he should be able to find Allen Robinson in this one plenty of times. If Chris Ivory can be more effective at running the ball compared to T.J. Yeldon, perhaps they can keep the Raiders defense in check to open up some more passing lanes.
