The Cincinnati Reds have amassed an exciting group of young infielders in their minor league system over the past two seasons. Noelvi Marte was acquired by the Reds in a deal that sent ace Luis Castillo to the Mariners last summer.
The 21-year-old signed with Seattle in 2019 during the international signing period and eventually made his minor league debut in 2021. He’s showcased his raw power to the pull-side and plus arm strength while making starts at shortstop and third base.
How does Marte compare to other fantasy baseball stash options for re-draft leagues? Let’s discuss.
Noelvi Marte's Start to 2023
Marte is off to a solid start at Double-A Chattanooga in 2023 after spending 2022 at High-A. Through 39 games, Marte is hitting .281 with eight home runs, 22 RBI, and eight stolen bases. He also has an impressive 18 percent strikeout rate with 16 walks in 2023, an exciting sign for young hitters.
In Marte’s previous two seasons in the minors, he combined for 36 home runs and 47 stolen bases through 222 games. His consistency at the plate will hopefully push him forward to the Triple-A level by season's end as he’s hit over .273 at every stop in the minors.
What's the Timetable?
Marte entered the year ranked second on Cincinnati’s prospect list according to MLB Pipeline, only behind infielder Elly De La Cruz. Number five prospect Matt McLain received the call to the majors on May 15 and has been filling in at shortstop. A crowded infield, led by Jonathan Indiaawaits Marte. A 2024 debut looks more likely for the young star.
Adding to the Cincinnati prospect mix, Christian Encarnacion-Strand, who hit his 11th home run on Wednesday at Triple-A, has been knocking at the major league door for weeks now. Encarnacion-Strand is looking to lock up the first baseman role when future Hall of Famer Joey Votto is ready to hang up his cleats.
Noelvi Marte’s 2023 fantasy baseball value for re-draft leagues is speculative. If fantasy managers have a non-active roster spot to fill, it doesn’t hurt to take a chance on Marte but Encarnacion-Strand and De La Cruz seem like better bets to make the jump this season. Noelvi Marte is most definitely a name to monitor heading into next season as possesses the skills to blossom into a superstar.
