Pitcher Trent Thornton (leg) went down with a lower-leg injury in the ninth inning of Thursday's game and was carted off the field. He collapsed when coming off the mound, attempting to cover first base on a grounder to the right side, Daniel Kramer of MLB.com reports. It appears that Thornton is scheduled for an MRI on Friday to determine the severity of the injury, which will help the Mariners determine the timeline for Thornton's return to the mound. The incident appeared to be a freak accident, and the Mariners and Thornton are hoping for the best. Thornton owns a 4.68 ERA and a 1.30 WHIP in 42 ⅓ innings pitched this season. UPDATE: Thornton, who was on crutches in the clubhouse after the game, fears that he suffered a significant left-Achilles injury. He'll undergo an MRI exam on Friday to confirm.--Nicho Roessler
