Steven Matz Hopes To Reach Potential Under New Manager
7 years agoRookie New York Mets Manager Mickey Callaway comes to Queens from the Cleveland Indians, where he served as pitching coach and oversaw starting pitchers such as Corey Kluber, Carlos Carrasco, and Trevor Bauer. That’s great news for all Mets pitchers, but perhaps none more so than Steven Matz. A former top prospect just a few years ago, Matz has been plagued by inconsistency and injury during his time in the big leagues. Matz owns a career 3.99 ERA, 1.53 WHIP, 8.09 K/9 and 2.30 BB/9 across 234.2 innings pitched, debuting in 2015, and has shown several flashes of brilliance. While Callaway won’t be able to help much with injury woes, one would like to think he’ll be able to help Matz stay more consistent on the field. At the cheap draft price that Matz will likely go for this spring, we’re bullish on making the minor investment in him.
