7 months agoThe Philadelphia Phillies placed infielder/outfielder Weston Wilson on the paternity list on Monday and recalled right-hander Max Lazar from Triple-A Lehigh Valley in a corresponding move. The Phillies also optioned left-hander Kolby Allard to Lehigh Valley and recalled infielder Buddy Kennedy from Lehigh Valley. Wilson can miss up to three days and is likely to be unavailable for the entire series against the visiting Houston Astros this week in a rematch of last year's World Series. The 29-year-old has hit a strong .353/.370/.647 with a 1.017 OPS in his 51 at-bats for the Phillies this year, albeit with only three home runs, seven RBI and 10 runs scored on the short side of a platoon in the outfield. Austin Hays is starting in left field for the Phils on Monday and is hitting ninth against Astros right-hander Ronel Blanco.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

1 month agoPhiladelphia Phillies outfielder Weston Wilson (oblique) felt something in his oblique while taking swings in the batting cage at camp on Friday morning. The severity of Wilson's injury is unknown, but he'll likely go for testing to determine if he'll need to miss any time in spring training. If it's an oblique injury, the 30-year-old will most likely have to miss at least around a week of action, depending on the severity. If healthy, he should be on Philly's Opening Day roster as a reserve outfielder/first baseman after hitting an impressive .284/.347/.489 with an .836 OPS, three home runs, 10 RBI and 13 runs scored in 98 plate appearances over 40 games played. Wilson doesn't have a ton of MLB experience (48 games in two seasons), but when given the chance, he has hit the ball hard consistently. The problem is he doesn't have a clear path to regular playing time.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

2 months agoPhiladelphia Phillies outfielder/first baseman Weston Wilson will be competing with Kody Clemens and Buddy Kennedy at spring training this year for the second utility job behind infielder Edmundo Sosa, who is a lock for the Opening Day roster, according to MLB.com's Todd Zolecki. If the Phillies are looking for balance on their roster, Wilson might make the most sense just because of the fact that he hits right-handed, and the team already has a lot of lefty swingers on the roster. He can also play left field occasionally against tough left-handed pitchers. However, both Clemens and Kennedy are out of minor-league options and would have to be exposed to waivers if they are cut. The 30-year-old Wilson has only played in 48 big-league games the last two years, but he's hit .375 with four homers, 12 RBI and six steals and could be on the short side of a platoon for the Phils to open the 2025 campaign.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

7 months agoThe Philadelphia Phillies reinstated infielder/outfielder Weston Wilson from the paternity list on Wednesday and optioned infielder Buddy Kennedy to Triple-A Lehigh Valley after Tuesday night's game in a corresponding move. It remains to be seen if Wilson will immediately jump back into the starting lineup for Wednesday's series finale against the Houston Astros at Citizens Bank Park. The 29-year-old ended up only missing two days for the birth of his child. Now that he's back, he'll mostly serve in a platoon role in the outfield for Philadelphia when the team faces a left-handed pitcher, limiting his fantasy appeal to NL-only leagues. He's a fine sleeper target in DFS against southpaws and has hit an impressive .353 overall (18-for-51) with only three home runs and seven RBI on the season. Wilson has gone 12-for-25 (.480) with two of his three homers against lefties in 2024.--Keith Hernandez - RotoBaller

8 months agoPhiladelphia Phillies outfielder Weston Wilson went 4-for-5 with a single, double, triple, and a round-tripper to lead the Phillies to a victory on Thursday evening. Wilson also scored three runs and tallied one RBI. The Clemson product has made just ten starts since rejoining the Phillies in mid-July. Through this stretch, the 29-year-old has performed quite well with a .342/.350/.684 line, three home runs, seven RBI and two doubles. Wilson could begin to earn aa starting role in left field as Brandon Marsh has gone just 7-for-40 through August. Wilson could be worth adding in deeper leagues for now, given his recent hot stretch, and may eventually be a popular target in all leagues if he can find his way into the starting nine on a consistent basis.--Andy Smith - RotoBaller
