Toronto Blue Jays starting pitcher Max Scherzer was outstanding on the mound during Thursday's outing against the Chicago Cubs. Scherzer threw five shutout innings before allowing a solo home run off the bat of Michael Busch. Despite that, Scherzer still worked deep into this game and helped his team get the win. He tossed seven innings, allowing one earned run on five hits, while striking out three batters. Scherzer gave up a leadoff double to begin the eighth, so the Blue Jays decided to change pitchers despite him only being at 78 pitches. His next start will come in a favorable matchup against the Pirates in Pittsburgh.--Andy WebbSource: mlb.com

San Diego Padres starting pitcher Michael King (knee) has been placed on the 15-day injured list, retroactive to Aug. 11. Well, this is frustrating, as King was only able to make one start in the rotation before heading back to the injured list. He was prviously out since May due to a right-shoulder injury. At least this time it's not an arm issue, so hopefully King won't be out longer than the two weeks. In a corresponding move, right-hander Randy Vasquez has been recalled to take the spot on the active roster. Vasquez figures to take King's spot in the rotation, so he'll probably draw the start against the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday.--Andy WebbSource: San Diego Padres

Minnesota Vikings head coach Kevin O'Connell said that quarterback J.J. McCarthy will not play in the team's second preseason game on Saturday against the New England Patriots. Instead, Sam Howell will get the start. In the preseason opener last week against the Houston Texans, McCarthy went 4-for-7 for 30 yards and rushed one time for eight yards in his only drive of the game. The 22-year-old missed his entire rookie season in 2024 due to a torn meniscus in his knee, but he enters 2025 as Minnesota's unquestioned starter under center. The former Michigan signal-caller has plenty of upside with Justin Jefferson (hamtring) and Jordan Addison (suspension) as his top two receivers, but Jefferson has been nursing a hamstring injury all summer, and Addison will miss the first three games. At best, McCarthy will be a midrange QB2 in fantasy.--Keith HernandezSource: Minnesota Vikings

Free-agent rookie wide receiver Isaiah Bond announced on Thursday that he signed an undisclosed deal with the Cleveland Browns, according to ESPN Cleveland. It was announced that Bond, a former Texas wideout, faces no further criminal charges after he was arrested in April on an outstanding sexual-assault warrant. In his only season at Texas in 2024, Bond caught 34 passes for 540 yards and five touchdowns. In his first two collegiate seasons at Alabama, he caught 65 passes for 888 yards and five touchdowns. The 21-year-old will merely be trying to make the 53-man roster going into the regular season, which will be a tall task since he's just now joining the team. There is opportunity in Cleveland's receiving room behind Jerry Jeudy and Cedric Tillman, though.--Keith HernandezSource: ESPN Cleveland

Philadelphia Phillies starting pitcher Aaron Nola (ribs, ankle) is scheduled to come off the 60-day injured list and take the mound against the Washington Nationals on Sunday. Nola has been out since the middle of May due to an ankle issue. The right-hander would later suffer a ribs issue. After three rehab outings, Nola appears ready to get back on the mound for the Phillies. Fantasy managers should make sure to get Nola active and back into their lineups ahead of this one. It's worth noting that the Phillies plan to move to a six-man rotation now. That will help keep their starters rested for the postseason, but also mean less starts for Nola down the stretch.--Andy WebbSource: Scott Lauber

Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles said that with the exception of receiver Mike Evans and defender Lavonte David, every starter will play in the team's second preseason game on Saturday against the Pittsburgh Steelers. Mayfield will probably only play for a series or two this weekend before giving way to veteran Teddy Bridgewater. The 30-year-old has blossomed the last two years in Tampa and made back-to-back Pro Bowls. He threw for a career-high 4,500 yards, 41 touchdowns and a league-high 16 interceptions in 17 regular-season starts in his second year with the team last year. While it will certainly be tough for Mayfield to match those numbers in another year of a new offensive coordinator, his weapons remain largely unchained in what should once again be a pass-happy offense. On volume alone, Mayfield figures to be in the low-end QB1 picture.--Keith HernandezSource: Tampa Bay Times - Rick Stroud

Indianapolis Colts wide receiver Josh Downs (hamstring) left Thursday's training camp practice early due to a left-hamstring injury, according to Stephen Holder of ESPN. Downs injured his hamstring on a play and immediately went to the trainers while walking off the field under his own power. As Holder says, it's definitely a situation worth monitoring after he became a bigger part of Indy's offense in 2024 with a 72-803-5 line on 107 targets in 14 games (eight starts) in his second year in the NFL. For now, we'll consider Downs day-to-day until we know more about the severity of his injury. The Colts' quarterback situation makes all of their receiving targets less than ideal for fantasy purposes, but Downs is worth a look as a WR4/5 for WR depth in fantasy if he's healthy. If Downs' hamstring injury lingers, it will benefit Adonai Mitchell and Alec Pierce (groin) the most.--Keith HernandezSource: ESPN.com - Stephen Holder

Los Angeles Angels right-handed reliever Robert Stephenson (biceps) will start a minor-league rehab assignment with Triple-A Salt Lake on Thursday night, according to Angels PR. Stephenson is nearing a return to the big-league bullpen after being out since the end of May with right-biceps inflammation. The 32-year-old did not pitch at all in 2024 due to injury and only tossed one inning earlier this year before going on the injured list, so the Halos certainly won't be rushing the veteran reliever back. However, barring a setback with his biceps, Stephenson figures to bolster the Angels' bullpen before the end of August. Kenley Jansen is locked into the team's closer role, but Stephenson could be pitching in high-leverage, late-inning situations before the end of the season. In his last full season with the Rays and Pirates in 2023, he had a 3.10 ERA, 0.88 WHIP, one save and a 77:16 K:BB in 52 1/3 innings.--Keith HernandezSource: Angels PR

Los Angeles Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford (back) will have another workout this Saturday before the team's second preseason game against the Los Angeles Chargers at Sofi Stadium, according to head coach Sean McVay. The workout will be similar to the one he had last Saturday, Aug. 9. "Hopefully [his back] responds a little bit better," McVay said. "We're trying to get our hands around this as well, so I don't really have much more information other than think we're trying some different things that are hopefully going to be in alignment with getting him back out on the field." The 37-year-old looked good in last Saturday's workout and was supposed to practice for the first time on Monday, but that never happened. It sounds like his aggravated disc issue is more serious than previously though, although it's still unclear if it might affect his Week 1 availability. The longer he remains out of practice, though, the greater chances Stafford won't be ready for the regular-season opener.--Keith HernandezSource: ESPN.com - Sarah Barshop

The Athletic's Matt Schneidman reports that Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love (thumb) is wearing a soft cast after having surgery to address a ligament injury in his left (non-throwing) thumb. Love is still expected to return to practice next week. Even if he were fully healthy, Love was not expected to play in the second preseason game this Saturday against the Indianapolis Colts. The 26-year-old will get back to practice next week and is fully expected to be ready for Week 1 of the 2025 regular season. Love missed two games due to injury in his second full season as the starter in 2024 and finished with 3,389 passing yards, 25 touchdowns and 11 interceptions, a slight step back from the previous campaign. The Packers' offense needs to stay healthy, but if Love ends up running more, a bounce-back season could be in store. Draft him as a low-end QB2 with upside this fall.--Keith HernandezSource: The Athletic - Matt Schneidman

Cleveland Browns running back Quinshon Judkins is not expected to face any formal charges, according to NFL insider Jordan Schultz. The rookie second-round pick out of Ohio State has not signed with the team, but he could join the organization shortly after prosecutors declined to move forward with the case against him. Judkins was arrested on a domestic violence charge in July, but this situation seems to be coming to a close. It's unclear whether or not the NFL will still consider a suspension for Judkins. While his return to action in the near future helps his fantasy prospects, he's behind on preparation and could be eased into a role for the 2025 season. Running backs Jerome Ford and Dylan Sampson should be expected to see early-season action.--Jackson Sparks - RotoBallerSource: Jordan Schultz

Athletics rookie shortstop Jacob Wilson (forearm) will start a minor-league rehab assignment with Triple-A Las Vegas on Saturday, per MLB.com's Martin Gallegos. Wilson has already started baseball activities as he works his way back from a left-forearm fracture that has kept him out since late July. Barring a setback for the 23-year-old on his rehab assignment with the Aviators, he could rejoin the major-league roster next week. Until then, expect Darrell Hernaiz to continue serving as the club's primary shortstop. Despite having one of the slowest swings in the big leagues, Wilson is among the most difficult to strike out and made his first All-Star team in 2025. The former sixth overall pick in 2023 out of Grand Canyon University has been fortunate to have a .312 batting average (115-for-369) when looking at his xBA of .284, and he only has 10 home runs and 45 RBI for the young A's.--Keith HernandezSource: MLB.com - Martin Gallegos

Cleveland Guardians left-hander John Means (elbow) is scheduled to make a minor-league rehab start for High-A Lake County on Friday and will throw three innings, according to Tim Stebbins of MLB.com. It's a big step for Means, who will be pitching in his first game since having a second Tommy John surgery in June of 2024. The 32-year-old southpaw is going to probably need a handful of starts in the minors, but if he can avoid a setback, it's possible that he could be a starting-rotation option for the Guards in September as they look to get into the postseason. For fantasy purposes, managers shouldn't be expecting Means to make any kind of impact. Means made his only All-Star squad in his second year in the big leagues with Baltimore in 2019 and has yet to do much since. He has started only 10 games in the big leagues since the start of 2022 due to injuries.--Keith HernandezSource: MLB.com - Tim Stebbins

Carolina Panthers wide receiver Jalen Coker (illness) did not practice on Thursday due to an illness, according to head coach Dave Canales. The second-year wideout out of Holy Cross had a solid showing in the team's first preseason game of the year last week, snagging two receptions for 17 yards and a touchdown. In his rookie season, the 23-year-old tallied 32 receptions on 46 targets for 478 yards and two touchdowns. While rookie Tetairoa McMillan is expected to be the immediate WR1 for quarterback Bryce Young, Coker could be a sneaky fantasy football value pick if Carolina's offense takes a step forward. Luckily, Coker is not dealing with anything serious and should return to action soon.--Jackson Sparks - RotoBallerSource: NFL.com

New York Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez and outfielder/designated hitter Starling Marte will both get the day off for Thursday's contest against the division-rival Atlanta Braves at Citi Field. Luis Torrens will be behind the plate and hit ninth, while Ronny Mauricio will serve as the DH and bat out of the seven-hole against Braves right-hander Bryce Elder. It's a good day for Alvarez to take off after going 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in another disappointing loss on Wednesday. Marte has been swinging it well of late and is currently riding a modest four-game hitting streak (7-for-17 with two homers). Since returning from a stay in the minors, Alvarez has swung it well, going 14-for-50 (.280) with three home runs, four doubles, a triple and eight RBI in 17 games played since July 21. Neither Torrens nor Mauricio have ever faced Elder in their careers.--Keith HernandezSource: MLB.com

According to NFL.com and New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel, veteran safety Kyle Dugger has been demoted to the second-team defense. Dugger signed a four-year, $58 million contract last offseason, but Vrabel is not tied to decisions from previous coaching staffs. When asked how Dugger can win his starting job back, Vrabel said, "Just making sure that he's where he needs to be and understanding the coverage concepts and everything we do. A lot of this is that guys have earned the right to take a look with that first unit and, again, there will be different lineups and different things. Just focus on the reps that you get right now." It sounds like the 29-year-old has been outplayed by other safeties this offseason, and Vrabel is attempting to motivate him to work his way back. In 74 career games since being selected in the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft, Dugger has tallied 424 tackles, 3.5 sacks, three forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, nine interceptions, and 24 pass deflections.--Jackson Sparks - RotoBallerSource: NFL.com

Veteran free-agent running back Matt Breida is retiring from the NFL, according to ESPN. The former undrafted free agent signing out of Georgia Southern by the San Francisco 49ers in 2017 compiled 575 rushing attempts for 2,652 rushing yards and caught 120 passes for 935 receiving yards in 98 career games with the 49ers, Miami Dolphins, Buffalo Bills, and New York Giants. He tallied 15 total touchdowns. Breida had his moments on the fantasy football radar, particularly in 2018 when he rushed for 814 yards and tallied 261 receiving yards as a sophomore in Kyle Shanahan's offense. The 30-year-old declined a workout request from the Miami Dolphins this offseason.--Jackson Sparks - RotoBallerSource: ESPN

Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert will play in his first career preseason game on Saturday against the Los Angeles Rams. Head coach John Harbaugh said the plan is for offensive and defensive starters, and Herbert will play "a series or two." While Herbert is viewed by many as one of the top quarterbacks in the NFL, his fantasy floor and ceiling took hits last season in Greg Roman's run-first offense. After throwing for at least 4,336 yards in the first three seasons of his career, the Oregon product tallied just 3,870 passing yards in 17 games a season ago. While he has a ton of upside in shootout game conditions, Harbaugh and Roman are unlikely to transition into a high-flying passing attack.--Jackson Sparks - RotoBallerSource: Chargers.com

Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts said that the chances of right-handed reliever Brusdar Graterol (shoulder) pitching this year are "slim." Graterol is at the team's spring training facilities in Arizona but hasn't resumed throwing as he continues to rehab from surgery that he had last November for a torn labrum in his right shoulder. The 26-year-old has been out all season and probably isn't going to be an option to help a beleaguered Dodgers bullpen down the stretch and into the postseason. The Venezuelan hurler had a combined 11 saves in 2022 and 2023 in L.A. but has managed to pitch in just seven big-league games the last two seasons, making him a non-tender candidate this winter. Graterol has a decent 2.78 ERA and 1.04 WHIP in his six major-league seasons, but it has also come with a strikeout rate under 20%.--Keith HernandezSource: Los Angeles Times - Mike DiGiovanna

Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton announced that the team's key starters, including quarterback Bo Nix, will not play in the preseason game against the Arizona Cardinals on Saturday. The starters will play around 10 snaps next week against the New Orleans Saints. In Week 1 of the preseason, Nix completed six of 11 passing attempts for 31 yards and no touchdowns. The sophomore former first-round pick out of Oregon exceeded expectations in Year 1, helping lead Denver to its first playoff game since Super Bowl 50 against the Carolina Panthers. With an elite offensive line in front of him and a much-improved running back stable this season, Nix should be set up for success in Payton's offense.--Jackson Sparks - RotoBallerSource: Aric DiLalla

Green Bay Packers wide receivers Romeo Doubs (back) and Dontayvion Wicks (calf) did not practice on Thursday due to back and calf injuries, respectively. Head coach Matt LaFleur said Doubs suffered a back injury in Tuesday's practice, but the ailment is not viewed as serious. Wicks has been out of action for a few weeks. Fellow Green Bay wideouts Savion Williams (concussion), Jayden Reed (foot), and Christian Watson (knee) are also banged up, leaving rookie Matthew Golden to soak up a ton of opportunities in training camp. Golden likely has the highest upside among all Packers' pass-catchers, but 2025 could be another year of the Packers lacking a true No. 1 target hog.--Jackson Sparks - RotoBallerSource: Matt Schneidman -- The Athletic

Green Bay Packers wide receiver Jayden Reed (foot) was seen out of his walking boot on Thursday, but the third-year wideout is still not participating in practice. Reed is dealing with a sprained foot, and it's unclear if it will affect his Week 1 availability. The Packers' wide receiver room is dealing with several injuries during training camp, as Romeo Doubs, Savion Williams, Dontayvion Wicks, and Christian Watson are all out of action. First-round rookie Matthew Golden stands to benefit from extra opportunities in their absences. Reed remains a viable flex option for fantasy football, but it appears he is trending toward being relegated to three-WR sets once again in 2025.--Jackson Sparks - RotoBallerSource: Matt Schneidman -- The Athletic

The Washington Nationals announced on Thursday that they designated first baseman Nathaniel Lowe for assignment to make room on the active roster for outfielder Dylan Crews (oblique), who is returning from the 60-day injured list. Lowe gets the boot off the team's 40-man roster after hitting .216/.292/.373 on the year with 16 home runs, 68 RBI, 50 runs scored and one stolen base in 440 at-bats in his first year with the team. The 30-year-old left-handed slugger was acquired from the Texas Rangers in the offseason and just didn't work out the way Washington was hoping. Lowe's departure from the roster means that fellow left-handed slugger Josh Bell will be the primary option at first in D.C. moving forward. Lowe will most likely go unclaimed on waivers before electing for free agency, but he should latch on with another team before the end of the season.--Keith HernandezSource: Washington Nationals

Cincinnati Reds infield prospect Sal Stewart extended his hit streak to seven games on Wednesday in epic fashion, going 4-for-6 at Triple-A Louisville, including a pair of doubles, a home run, five RBI, and two runs scored. The Reds' top-ranked prospect has homered in back-to-back games and is now 30-for-89 (.337) with 12 doubles and six home runs at Triple-A, boasting a 12.0 percent strikeout rate and an above-average walk rate of 10.0 percent. The 21-year-old does not appear to be overmatched whatsoever and is making a strong case for a September call-up. With 16 steals on the year, he also possesses an element of speed and has the well-rounded makings of an appealing fantasy asset.--Jarod RuppSource: MiLB.com

New York Mets pitching prospect Eduardo Herrera has been promoted from High-A Brooklyn to Triple-A Syracuse. The 25-year-old has had an excellent season in relief for the Cyclones, recording a 1.98 ERA, a 1.17 WHIP, and 29 strikeouts in 27 1/3 innings pitched. The right-hander even made one appearance in relief at Double-A midseason, in which he did not allow a run and struck out three batters in 2 1/3 innings. Now just one step away from the majors, the Venezuelan could provide some bullpen depth for a Mets team looking to make a playoff run, although if he were to get the call, it would likely be as a middle relief option, so he would not carry any fantasy value.--Jarod RuppSource: MiLB.com

The Washington Nationals announced on Thursday that they reinstated outfielder Dylan Crews (oblique) from the 60-day injured list and designated first baseman Nathaniel Lowe for assignment in a corresponding move. The Nationals have not released their starting lineup for Thursday's contest against the division-rival Philadelphia Phillies in the series opener, but we'd be surprised if Crews was not in it. The 23-year-old second overall pick in 2023 has missed nearly three months with a strained left oblique but will be looking for more success to close out his second season in the big leagues. Crews was a disappointment for fantasy managers before going down with an injury, slashing .196/.266/.354 with a .620 OPS, seven home runs, 15 RBI, 24 runs and 11 steals in 45 games. Fantasy managers in keeper/dynasty leagues should not be giving up on him just yet.--Keith HernandezSource: Washington Nationals

Philadelphia Phillies outfield prospect Justin Crawford went 2-for-4 on Wednesday for Triple-A Lehigh Valley, including a double, three RBI, one run scored, and a stolen base. The Phillies' third-ranked prospect is now the owner of an eight-game hit streak, and has hit safely in 17 of his last 20 games, going 25-for-70 (.357) over that stretch with a .944 OPS. The former first-round draft pick is slashing .331/.414/.438 on the year with 37 steals and a 53:79 BB:K in 96 games for the Iron Pigs. With as hot as he's been all year, it is somewhat surprising we haven't seen a call-up for the 21-year-old, but his speed could be a difference-maker down the stretch and in the playoffs, so a September debut is still very much in the cards.--Jarod RuppSource: MiLB.com
