The Kansas City Royals announced on Wednesday that they placed infielder/outfielder Nick Loftin (concussion) on the seven-day concussion injured list and recalled outfielder MJ Melendez from Triple-A Omaha in a corresponding move. The 26-year-old utility man will have to miss at least a week of action. It's unclear when he suffered his head injury, but there are no guarantees that the former first-rounder will be back with the Royals next week. Loftin has filled a utility role for the Royals this season and hasn't done much offensively, going 24-for-111 (.216) with just three home runs, 13 RBI, 12 runs scored and a stolen base in his 37 games played. When he returns from his concussion, he should remain on the waiver wire in mixed fantasy leagues.--Keith Hernandez
