Griffin Canning's Curveball Could Take Him To Next Level
4 years agoLos Angeles Angels starting pitcher Griffin Canning had a slow start last season but posted a 3.14 ERA in his last five starts of 2020, capped by a career-high 10-strikeout performance against a potent Padres lineup while holding them to one run and two hits over six innings. The 24-year-old had a 47 percent whiff rate -- compared to 34 percent in 2019 -- on his revamped curveball. The right-hander relied more on his slider (28.9 percent) than his curve (16 percent) in his rookie season in 2019, but he turned more to the curveball (22.9 percent) in 2020 than his slider (20.7 percent). There's some injury risk with the 24-year-old from UCLA, but Canning is well worth his current price (308 ADP) in the later rounds of drafts after his strong finish to the 2020 campaign.
