New York Mets catcher Francisco Alvarez (thumb) will begin a minor-league rehab assignment either Wednesday or Thursday, per MLB.com's Anthony DiComo. The 23-year-old was placed on the 10-day injured list retroactive to August 18 with a right thumb UCL sprain. He will eventually need surgery, but the team hopes he will be able to play through it for the rest of the season. DiComo noted that Alvarez will return to the Mets in September if he can play through the pain and produce offensively. Alvarez was putting together a decent season before his injury, slashing .265/.349/.438 with seven home runs and 24 RBI in 209 plate appearances. Pain management seems to be a key aspect of his timetable, but he could be a potentially useful fantasy option down the stretch if he can return to form.--Connelly Doan
