NBA Waiver Wire: Week 7 Category Streamers

Welcome to Week 7, and another tough weekend for streamers. Again, it was a rough crop to choose from, but I found a few diamonds in the rough that could swing a category and more importantly a win in your favor.

Overall the ownership percentages were a little higher than I normally try to focus on in this article, but the drop off after the below recommendations was huge, so I’m crossing my fingers you all are in the majority of leagues where these players are available.

This column will be posted every week as part of RotoBaller's regular season NBA coverage for the 2015-16 NBA season. It will focus on available players who could win you your H2H matchup in specific categories.

All of these players will have multiple games over the weekend, but in most cases will only help your team in one or two categories. To be clear, most of these players are “streamers,” meaning that unless they drastically increase their basketball skills overnight, these players should NOT be rostered for an extended period of time in leagues of standard depth. Everyone should only be used if you need help winning a specific category in your matchup and you don’t have to drop anyone valuable.

Last thing, we’ll usually only focus on one player per category, but list other available options underneath. Certain guys might be listed in more than one category, so if you need help in both, be sure to make those players a priority.

NBA Week 7 Category Streamers

Rebounds (and hopefully Blocks) Streamer

Cody Zeller (CHA, PF/C) - 17% owned

Weekend Schedule: Fri @ MEM, Sat vs. BOS

While usually these two categories are the easiest to stream week to week, this weekend was unusually difficult to find a respectable recommendation. Cody Zeller has quietly had some good games of late in the absence of Al Jefferson, and has two above average match ups this weekend to help in both rebounds and blocks.

On Friday, Zeller faces off against the tough front court pairing of Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol, and the Hornets will surely need Zeller to play big minutes to compete. With lots of action in the paint, there should be a ton of rebound and block opportunities. This is actually a deceivingly good fantasy match up for Zeller, who has the potential to sniff a double double if the ball bounces his way.

On Saturday Zeller squares off against his brother Tyler Zeller and the Boston Celtics. Although the two probably won’t see much time against each other on the court, it should be extra motivation for the more talented younger sibling. In addition, this game will be very fast paced, giving some extra possessions for Cody to rack up rebounds and blocks.

It looks like Coach Clifford has gained some trust in the young forward over the last few games, with Zeller averaging around 26 minutes a game, and I think that trend will continue through the weekend. Zeller is probably your best chance to hit a home run in rebounds or blocks this weekend other than Bismack Biyombo (listed below), so make either a priority if you need help in one or both of the categories.

Also consider:  Bismack Biyombo (C, TOR)

3PM Streamer

Mirza Teletovic (PHX, SF/PF) - 24% owned

Weekend Schedule: Fri @ POR, Sun vs. MIN

I recommended Mirza back in week five, and since then he has continued firing away from beyond the arc. This weekend Mirza has great matchups, and I don’t think he’ll be slowing down a bit. With Tyson Chandler out, Mirza has benefited from an increase in playing time, so it should be an even bigger boost to his potential 3PM this weekend.

On Friday in Portland, Mirza will be matched up against a very underwhelming front court of Chris Kaman, Ed Davis, and one of the Plumlee Brothers. On Sunday he’ll be matched up against a very feisty Timberwolves squad, but they still have a Defensive Rating over 100, and allow the seventh most 3PA in the league.

Over his last 10 games, Teletovic has averaged just under six 3PA a game and exactly three 3PM a game. Just taking a quick glance down his game logs, you might be surprised to see that Mirza is not only shooting and making a ton of three’s, but he’s doing it no matter how long he’s in the game. He shot seven 3PA in a game where he played 39 minutes, and the night before shot nine 3PA when he only played 19 minutes.

If he contributed a little more in other categories, Teletovic would be a must add, but for now he’ll surely help you in 3PM this weekend.

BONUS 3PM Streamer !

Brandon Rush (GSW, SG) - 1% owned (Check Status of Klay Thompson)

Weekend Schedule: Fri @ BOS, Sat @ MIL

Please note: This recommendation is completely hinged on Klay Thompson’s injury status heading into the weekend. He is currently questionable for Friday, but would make Brandon Rush a near must-add if he sits out both games this weekend.

Friday’s game against the Celtics could be worth the add alone if Rush see’s 20 minutes or more. The game will feature two of the fastest paced teams in the league, and there will certainly be a lot of open three point opportunities for Rush with all the attention on Steph Curry and the rest of the Warriors.

Rush has battled injuries his entire career, but has always been a sharp shooter from deep, and is shooting a red hot 51.5% from three point range this season. If given the opportunity he could easily eclipse six 3PM this weekend, which could certainly be enough to swing that category in your favor.

Also consider: O.J Mayo (PG/SG, MIL)

Assists Streamer

O.J Mayo (MIL, PG/SG) - 17% owned

Weekend Schedule: Fri @ TOR, Sat vs GSW

Never ever did I think I would ever recommend O.J Mayo as an assist streamer. But here we are, in 2015 and the Bucks are that desperate for competent guard play. With the previously starting Jared Bayless out for a few weeks, O.J Mayo has really had to step up as a primary ball handler in Milwaukee.

Mayo doesn’t necessarily have a high ceiling like some of the other streamers I've recommended, but the player pool for assists is even scarcer than usual. Mayo has been surprisingly consistent in his new increased role and has pretty solid matchups this weekend.

Friday the Bucks play at Toronto, which individually isn’t a great matchup for Mayo, as he’ll either go head to head against Kyle Lowry or DeMar DeRozan pretty much the whole night. However, Mayo is one of the guys that has the ability to play up to his competition, and would not be shocked to see him try to outduel the stellar Raptors back court. While this might not help your teams FG%, he does have the ability to score points in bunches and has drained at least two 3PM in six of his last ten games.

On Saturday, Mayo gets to face off against the immortal Stephen Curry and the undefeated Golden State Warriors. This will be the second night of a back to back for the Warriors, and the final game of their grueling eight game road trip across the country. You better believe the young and hungry Bucks will give Golden State their best shot, and if they have any chance, they’ll need a big night out of Mayo. The sheer pace and style of this game will really help Mayo from a fantasy perspective, and I would not be surprised to see him hit his season high in assists and points. They might lose by 30, but fantasy wise this is a great matchup for O.J.

Also consider: Patty Mills (SAS, PG)
