ANALYSIS: Buffalo Bills running back James Cook has significantly benefited from the team's change at offensive coordinator, with the Bills placing a greater emphasis on the run and ensuring he receives ample touches. In the first four games after the departure of Ken Dorsey, the 24-year-old averaged an impressive 24 PPR points per game, consistently reaching 100 yards in each outing. However, the last two games have not been as favorable for Cook, as he scored just 10.4 PPR points despite receiving 37 touches in that span.
While Week 17 can be attributed to facing the best DVOA defense against the run, Week 16 against the Chargers represented a substantial missed opportunity.
In Week 18, the Bills face the Dolphins with the AFC East title at stake. A loss could potentially result in the Bills missing the playoffs altogether, making this game essentially an early postseason matchup. Miami ranks 22nd in points allowed to running backs this year, but they sit 21st in DVOA against the run. Running backs often have quieter performances against the Dolphins, as opponents usually need to score quickly to keep up. Cook is poised to rebound from two subpar weeks and ranks as a high-end RB1 in this crucial game with playoff implications.
