Fantasy Baseball Injury Report - Week 10 Updates for Yordan Alvarez, Nick Kurtz, Hunter Greene, Mark Vientos, Corbin Burnes, Michael King, Pablo Lopez

Yordan Alvarez - Fantasy Baseball Rankings, Draft Sleepers, MLB Injury News

Dr. Reuven Guy's fantasy baseball injury report for Week 10 (2025). Read the latest injury updates for Yordan Alvarez, Nick Kurtz, Hunter Greene, Mark Vientos, Corbin Burnes, Michael King, Pablo Lopez, more.

This past week has not been a good week for pitchers and injuries. It seems like pitchers were getting hurt more often than position players. In general, pitchers have a higher landing rate on the IL than hitters. The question is how to deal with it, and that is an overall strategy question/answer and not necessarily based on a single pitcher injury.

Because pitchers tend to get hurt more often, a seven-man bench in fantasy leagues should be primarily composed of pitchers. That does not mean they have to be starters, as middle relievers sometimes have more value than the fifth starting pitcher on a team or a minor pitcher being called up. Having a viable middle reliever or two on your roster could help with your ERA and WHIP and avoid the possible starter "blow up." Also, relievers can be added to your starting lineup if a pitcher is placed on the IL Monday morning. I will continue to highlight all injured players to help you maintain a balanced bench throughout the season.

Here's a little about myself for both new and returning readers. My name is Reuven Guy, and I am a practicing orthopedic/pain management physician assistant. I have been dealing with sports injuries for the past 19+ years. Therefore, I have knowledge of orthopedic injuries and their recovery times based on my medical experience. I also played fantasy baseball during that time. This has helped me get an advantage in this aspect of fantasy baseball, which I hope to share with you. I am also the co-host of the 2025 FSWA award-winning podcast "Beat the Shift." Injured Hitters for Fantasy Baseball

Yordan Alvarez (OF, HOU)- Hand

Alvarez is on the IL with right-hand inflammation. He had recent imaging of the right hand, which showed a minor fracture that was 60% healed. He will be shut down until it is completely healed. There is no clear timeline for his return as the fracture date is unknown.

Anthony Santander (OF, TOR)- Shoulder

Santander was placed on the IL with left shoulder inflammation. He has received a PRP injection and will rest for about a week. At that point, a better recovery timeline should be known.

Jordan Walker (OF, STL)-  Wrist

Walker was placed on the IL with left wrist discomfort. Cardinals manager Oliver Marmol said he expects Walker to return from the IL “pretty soon.” Alec Burleson is seeing more playing time with Walker out.

Christian Encarnacion-Strand (1B, CIN)- Back

Encarnacion-Strand is on a rehab assignment, continuing to rehab from his back injury. He could be activated very soon, later this week.

Dylan Crews (OF, WAS)- Oblique

Crews is on the IL with a left oblique strain. The Severity is not yet known. He has not yet resumed baseball activity, and he remains without a timeline for return.

Austin Hays (OF, CIN)- Foot

Hays was placed on the IL with a left foot contusion. He fouled a ball off his foot. The Severity is not yet known. He has been cleared to run later this week. Jake Fraley was activated off the IL to take his roster spot.

Cedric Mullins (OF, BAL)- Hamstring

Mullins was placed on the IL with a right hamstring strain retroactive to May 29. The severity is not known, and Cooper Hummel, Dylan Carlson, and Jorge Mateo could see more playing time with Mullins out.

Daulton Varsho (OF, TOR)- Hamstring

Varsho is on the IL with a Grade 1 strain of the left hamstring. This usually requires a two to four-week recovery time period. Jonatan Clase, Alan Roden, and Davis Schneider could fill in with both him and Santander out.

Miguel Andujar (DH, ATH)-Oblique

Andujar was placed on the IL with an oblique strain. The Severity is not yet known. JJ Bleday was called up and could see playing time with Andujar out.

Mark Vientos (3B, NYM)- Hamstring

Vientos injured his right hamstring while running to first base. He is on the IL with a right hamstring strain. The Severity is not yet known. Brett Baty will continue to see extended playing time, and Ronny Mauricio was called up.

Jacob Young (OF, WAS)- Shoulder

Young is on the IL with a left shoulder AC joint sprain. He will begin a rehab assignment soon and could be activated within the next week or two.

Nick Kurtz (1B, ATH)- Hip

Kurtz is on the IL with a strained left hip flexor. Kurtz has not yet resumed running but has a possible return timeline around June 9. Tyler Soderstrom has been moved back to first base for the Athletics.

Yoan Moncada (3B, LAA)- Knee

Moncada is on the IL with right knee inflammation. He missed a month earlier this year with a thumb injury, the severity of which is not yet known. Luis Rengifo will likely see the bulk of the starts at third base while Moncada is out.

Injured Starting Pitchers for Fantasy Baseball

Corbin Burnes (SP, ARI) - Elbow

Burnes was placed on the IL with an elbow sprain/strain. He will get a second opinion on his right elbow from well-known surgeon Dr. Neal ElAttrache, which is never a good sign. Burnes will be sidelined for at least the next couple of weeks, and Ryne Nelson will take Burnes' place in Arizona's starting rotation.

Logan Gilbert (SP, SEA) - Elbow

Gilbert was placed on the IL with a right elbow flexor strain. Gilbert started a rehab assignment and should need at least one more start before being activated from the IL.

Pablo Lopez (SP, MIN) - Lat

Lopez suffered a lat strain during his last start. Lopez said, “ It's not the greatest news to hear, to have to deal with, but if there's a silver lining, it's that it wasn't that posterior cuff or that I didn't feel anything blowing up." He will be placed on the IL, and there is no timeline for his return yet, as the severity is unknown. David Festa and Simeon Woods Richardson would appear to be the leading candidates to take his starting rotation spot for the Twins.

Hunter Greene (SP, CIN)- Groin

Greene was placed back on the IL with a right groin strain. Severity is not yet known, nor are the results of the MRI. Reds Manager Terry Francona also said that Greene dealt with a back issue during his last start. There is no timeline for his return. Wade Miley was signed and will take Greene’s rotation spot for the Reds.

Tyler Glasnow (SP, LAD)- Shoulder

Glasnow left his last start and was placed on the IL due to right shoulder inflammation. Glasnow threw off a mound last week and then experienced “general body soreness”. Manager Dave Roberts downplayed it, and Glasnow is set to throw again later this week. There is no clear timetable for his return, with his earliest return around June 27.

Nathan Eovaldi (SP, TEX)- Elbow

Eovaldi was placed on the IL with right posterior elbow (triceps) inflammation. Eovaldi had right triceps fatigue from his most recent outing and was placed on the IL for extra rest. He has already played catch since landing on the IL. Per general manager Chris Young, Eovaldi has nothing structurally wrong with his arm, and the Rangers believe that he will be able to return from the IL around when he is first eligible on June 13. Kumar Rocker was activated off the IL to take his roster spot.

Max Meyer (SP, MIA)- Hip

Meyer landed on the IL due to a left hip impingement. He will be out for the next few weeks as there is no timeline for his return. George Soriano was called up.

Michael King (SP, SD)- Shoulder

King was placed on the IL with right shoulder inflammation. He has begun playing light catch but does not have a return timeline. Stephen Kolek has been filling in for King in the Padres' rotation.

AJ Smith-Shawver (SP, ATL)- Elbow

Smith-Shawver was placed on the 60-day IL this week after suffering an elbow strain. He said that he heard a pop in his elbow. He will require Tommy John surgery and is done for the year.

Aaron Nola (SP, PHI)- Ankle

Nola was placed on the IL with a right ankle sprain. Nola threw a bullpen session last weekend and now feels some soreness on his right side. There is no timeline for his return.

Eduardo Rodriguez (SP, ARI)- Shoulder

Rodriguez was placed on the IL this week due to left shoulder inflammation. He recently completed a rehab assignment and could be activated this weekend.

Reese Olson (SP, DET)- Finger

Olson was placed on the IL with right ring finger inflammation. He had an injection for the inflammation this week and is scheduled to throw again later this week. Olson will now be out for a few more weeks as he has to ramp up his throwing program.

Sean Manaea (SP, NYM)- Oblique

Manaea continues to rehab an oblique injury suffered early this spring. He has thrown multiple bullpen sessions and may go out on a rehab assignment soon.

Brandon Woodruff (SP, MIL)- Shoulder

Woodruff continues to rehab from shoulder surgery last year and is on the IL. He was on a rehab assignment and hit by a comebacker, which may delay his activation to the Brewers' starting rotation.

Max Scherzer (SP, TOR)- Thumb/Lat/Back

Scherzer left his last start with a lat issue and has dealt with thumb and back issues since. He is scheduled for a simulated game later this week and could return with the Blue Jays by the end of June.

Shota Imanaga (SP, CHC)- Hamstring

Imanaga is on the IL with a hamstring strain. He has thrown multiple bullpen sessions and will require a rehab assignment before being activated off the IL and throwing off the mound again.

Jackson Jobe (SP, DET)- Elbow

This week, Jobe was placed on the IL with a Grade 1 flexor strain. There is no timeline for his return. Sawyer Gipson-Long should fill in for the Tigers in their rotation.

Yu Darvish (SP, SD)- Elbow

Darvish is on the IL with an elbow injury. The Padres are optimistic that he could be activated from the IL in late June.

Luis Gil (SP, NYY)- Lat

Gil has been on the IL with a lat strain since early this year. Gil threw a bullpen session but remains without a timeline to return yet.

Frankie Montas (SP, NYM)- Lat

Montas suffered a lat injury in March and began a rehab assignment, pitching three innings. He will need at least two more rehab starts before being activated from the IL.

Jordan Hicks (SP, SF)- Toe

Hicks is on the IL with right toe inflammation. The Severity is not yet known. Sean Hjelle was called up to take his starting spot.

Grayson Rodriguez (SP, BAL)- Elbow

Rodriguez has continued to rehab his elbow injury since spring training. He is throwing from flat ground but has no timetable for a return.

Justin Verlander (SP, SF)- Pectoral

Verlander is on the IL with a right pectoral strain. He is scheduled to face live hitters later this week, and then the Giants will decide his next step.

Kutter Crawford (SP, BOS)- Knee

Crawford continues to recover from right patellar tendinopathy. His rehab is now being delayed due to wrist pain. He will undergo more testing, and there is no timeline for his return.

Injured Relief Pitchers for Fantasy Baseball

Luke Weaver (RP, NYY)- Hamstring

Weaver is on the IL with a left hamstring strain. He is expected to miss four to six weeks. Devin Williams will step back into the closer role for the Yankees.

Liam Hendriks (RP, BOS)- Hip

Hendriks is on the IL with right hip inflammation. He said he has been pitching through it for the past few weeks. He will be out until at least June 13.

Porter Hodge (RP, CHC)- Oblique

Hodge was placed on the IL with a left oblique strain. Cubs manager Craig Counsell said this week that Hodge’s recovery is being slowed by hip impingement. There is no timeline for his return. Daniel Palencia has been closing for the Cubs.

Evan Phillips (RP, LAD)- Elbow

Phillips was placed on the IL and shut down due to right elbow inflammation. He is now scheduled for Tommy John surgery and is done for the year.

Kirby Yates (RP, LAD)- Hamstring

Yates continues to rehab from a right hamstring strain. He is expected to have a simulated game this week and could be activated without a rehab assignment.

Justin Slaten (RP, BOS)- Shoulder

Slaten was placed on the IL due to right shoulder inflammation. This was initially termed fatigue. The severity is unknown and could be activated on June 13 as soon as possible.
