Jim Turvey - RotoBaller

45 articles

I'm a lifelong fantasy baseball enthusiast who grew up a Yankees fan but now prays at the altar of the players on his fantasy team each year. I owe fantasy titles to Tim Lincecum (2008) and Chase Headley (2012) but I like to think they owe me a bit of gratitude for being brought along on the journey. I'm a mock draft junkie who loves to plan out my drafts before they even start. I'm a FanGraphs junkie who will quote Hard Hit Ball rate and Swinging Strike Rate more often than HR and K. It's all about The Process.

Week 15 Waiver Wire - Second Base (2B) and Shortstop (SS)

With the natural break of the All-Star Game, we’re going to take a slightly different approach with this column. For the first half of the season, it was a list of six or seven players that appeared week after week, with three new names getting a deeper dive each week. That was a fine format […]

Joaquin Benoit (RP, PHI) - Waiver Wire Pickups

BALLER MOVE: Add in 14+ Team Leagues OWNED IN: 27% of Yahoo! Leagues ANALYSIS: Phillies closers just seem to not want to hold on to the job for long, as Hector Neris was the latest to implode, giving up four runs in a third of an inning, including an insane three home runs in Saturday’s loss to […]

Didi Gregorius (SS, NYY) - Waiver Wire Pickups

BALLER MOVE: Add in 14+ Team Leagues OWNED IN: 19% of Leagues ANALYSIS: Didi Gregorius is back in the lineup for New York, and he has picked up right where he left off in 2016. The 27-year-old set career highs in nearly every statistical category last season, hitting .276 with 20 home runs. He had 68 runs, 70 […]

Week 5 Waiver Wire - Second Base (2B) and Shortstop (SS)

We are officially into May, which means every article you read will mention that readers will get to see the words “small sample size” and “stabilization point” with far less regularity, but breaking that very promise by mentioning that they won’t mention them. It’s that time of the baseball season. Speaking of stabilization, the own […]

Zack Wheeler (SP, NYM) - Waiver Wire Pickups

BALLER MOVE: Add in 12+ Team Leagues OWNED IN: 21% of Leagues ANALYSIS: Zack Wheeler continues to be close but not quite there in his return from Tommy John. He faced the Nationals twice in the last eight days, giving up five runs over 11 2/3 innings, a victory with the way the Nats offense is going right now. […]

Brandon Phillips (2B, ATL) - Waiver Wire Pickups

BALLER MOVE: Add in 12+ Team Leagues OWNED IN: 49% of Leagues ANALYSIS: Phillips had a few days off during the past week, but he’s still worthy of a roster spot, as proven by his continually increasing own percentage in Yahoo. In the previous week, Phillips had a solid week, hitting .357 with a homer and a steal […]

Joe Panik (2B, SF) - Waiver Wire Pickups

BALLER MOVE: Add in 12+ Team Leagues OWNED IN: 21% of Leagues ANALYSIS: Panik continued his production last week and is hitting .301 (before Monday’s game) all of the sudden with his typical 12 HR/8 SB production. It was only two seasons ago that Panik hit .312 over a 100-game sample, and his line drive (25.9%) and […]

Welcome to Week 5 of The Watch List. We have had a few iterations already, but here’s a friendly reminder for those who forgot: Each week we’ll be updating this list full of players who you maybe aren’t quite ready to pick up (depending on league size, of course), but who need to be on […]

Week 4 Waiver Wire - Second Base (2B) and Shortstop (SS)

We march along in April, as statistics move closer to being meaningful, but still aren’t quite there. We’re still early enough in the season that there are plenty of movers and shakers in the fantasy ranks. Players are being added and dropped left and right as fantasy owners try to catch lightning in a bottle/avoid […]

Week 4 Waiver Wire Watch List

Welcome to Week 4 of The Watch List. We have had a few iterations already, but here’s a friendly reminder for those who forgot. Each week we’ll be updating this list full of players who you aren’t quite ready to be picked up (depending on league size, of course), but who need to be on […]

Week 3 Waiver Wire - Second Base (2B) and Shortstop (SS)

Another week in the books, and now is the time you can start to contemplate parting ways with that 20th-rounder who is hitting a paltry .087 on the season (not to name names or anything, Jose Reyes.) It's the time when struggling hitters may be sent to the DL and roster spots begin to open […]

Week 3 Waiver Wire Watch List

Welcome to Week 3 of The Watch List. We introduced this piece last week, but here’s a friendly reminder for those who forgot. Each week we’ll be updating this list full of players who you aren’t quite ready to be pick up, but who need to be on your radar. We’ll look at eight players […]
