NBA Waiver Wire: Deep League Options (Week 3)

Milos Zvekic digs up deep league waiver adds for your fantasy basketball team. Follow RotoBaller for more NBA strategy, rankings, and waiver wire advice.

Got a lot of buddies who are NBA Fantasy fanatics just like you? You all got together and formed a deep league? Your leagues waiver wire is very active and nobody good stays on there after they produce a decent game or two?

Here is some advice to stay ahead of your mates and scoop up some talent from the wire before they do. It might just be the difference between a disappointing end in the fantasy playoffs and gloating as the Champion.

Deep League Add

JaMychal Green, PF, MEM (21% owned)

JaMychal Green is a locked starter for the Memphis Grizzlies and is getting 29 minutes a night. Now his upside isn't too high, but for a guy playing so much and with averages of 8.6 PTS, 5.1 REB, almost a block and half a steal, an assist and a three-pointer per game, he is sitting on too many waiver wires. His FG shooting is at 45.3% and he has a career average of 47.2; pretty nice for a guy on the wire. He is turning the ball over 1.3 times and shooting 66% from the FT line, but that is below his career averages. Those should get better, too.

With Green, you get a guy with solid rebounding and defensive stats, while he holds value because of his relatively decent percentages and contributions in all categories. The new Memphis head coach, David Fizdale, obviously trusts JaMychal so he will get plenty of run during the season to improve and contribute even more. Furthermore, if Zach Randolph gets injured, as he has done in the past, Green could get an even bigger minutes bump which could have him as a double-double threat every time he is on the court.

Super Deep League Add

Patrick Patterson, PF/C, TOR (10% owned)

Patrick Patterson is a stretch four on a Toronto team consisting of multiple scoring threats. Kyle Lowry likes to drive to the basket, Jonas Valanciunas is an inside force and DeMar DeRozan doesn't shoot three's. With DeMarre Carroll playing poorly so far this season, the space Patterson's three point range provides for his teammates has been crucial to Toronto's impressive start to the season.

He is hitting a three a night with 5.6 REB, 2.1 AST, a steal and a block. His shooting is pretty off so far, hitting only 32.7% from the field and 66.7% from the line. When you compare those with his career averages of 46.4 FG% and 74.7 FT% you have to believe his percentages will increase. He helps in all your counting stats and is getting 31 minutes per game.

Those minutes could take a slight hit when Jared Sullinger returns. But so far, Sullinger hasn't played a game this season and is set to miss another 2-3 months. Moreover, Valanciunas has missed Toronto's last two games due to a knee injury. Sullinger and Valanciunas are pretty injury prone, boding well for Patterson's playing time. If, or better said when, Patrick gets his shooting back to his normal level, he could be a valuable pickup in deep leagues for his all around production.

Insanely Deep League Add

Archie Goodwin, PG/SG, NO (5% owned)

Archie Goodwin is a longshot and probably just a one-month rental, but he has some upside while stranger things have happened. He just signed for the New Orleans Pelicans after Lance Stephenson sustained a long term injury and was waived. Tyreke Evans should be back before December 15th and that will hurt Goodwin's chances for minutes and production. Also Jrue Holiday's return (he is tending to his wife who is having brain surgery) would cut Goodwin's run even more, but it's unclear when Holiday will return this season.

Now that we listed all the reasons not to pick up Goodwin, let's take a look at what he could provide your team with. Last season, when he got the space in Phoenix after their injury woes he averaged 15 points and almost four assists, logging around 32 minutes per contest during February. He should get the same opportunity in New Orleans. His career per 36 minutes averages of 5.0 REB, 1.1 STL and 0.5 BLK make him and interesting option in very deep leagues. If he can see the floor for around 30 minutes, and equal or exceed his career production during the next month, he could overtake his competitors in the frontcourt and have enough value to remain in lineups even when Evans returns.
