Yesterday's Studs and Duds: Fantasy Baseball Recap from 5/25/16

Every day, we will be taking a quick look at the best and worst fantasy baseball performers from yesterday's games. There were several high-scoring games and a couple of pitchers' duels.

Here's a quick look at those who impressed on Wednesday, and those who want to pretend the day never happened.

Editor’s Note: To read about even more waiver wire options, be sure to check out our famous waiver wire pickups list which is a running list that is updated daily. Prefer using your phone? Our free waiver wire app is available for download in the Apple Store.

Fantasy Baseball Studs

Steven Matz (SP, NYM): Matz tossed eight shutout innings in a win against the Nationals, striking out seven and allowing only four singles and a walk. Since getting roughed up in his first start of the year, the sophomore has a microscopic 1.12 ERA and 0.85 WHIP.

Miguel Sano (3B/OF, MIN): Sano hit his eighth homer of the year, scoring two runs and knocking in two more to help the Twins knock off the Royals.

Eduardo Nunez (2B/3B/SS, MIN): Nunez fell a triple short of the cycle and drove in two runs from the leadoff spot. He’s already one homer away from tying his career high.

Kris Bryant (3B/OF, CHC): Bryant jacked a three-run homer and scored twice in a win over the Cardinals.

Ben Zobrist (2B/OF, CHC): Zobrist collected three hits, scored a run and drove in two. He’s been incredible so far, slashing .346/.453/.519 in his first season with the Cubs.

Matt Adams (1B, STL): Adams’ hot hitting continued yesterday, as he fell a triple shy of the cycle, scored twice, and knocked in two runs in a losing effort. It was his fifth multi-hit game in the last 10.

Rougned Odor (2B, TEX): Odor’s suspension for clocking Jose Bautista looms, but he filled up the box score yesterday. Despite getting just one hit in four at-bats, he scored three times, drove in three, and also stole a base.

Nomar Mazara (OF, TEX): Mazara homered and knocked in three runs to help Odor and the Rangers beat the Angels. Dude is 21 years old and hitting .320/.365/.500. He’s gonna be special.

Corey Kluber (SP, CLE): Kluber allowed just one earned run in 7 1/3 innings, striking out nine and beating the White Sox.

Matt Duffy (2B/3B, SFG): Duffy’s had a tough season, but had himself a nice game yesterday. He turned both of his singles into doubles with a pair of stolen bases, and added a run and RBI.

Russell Martin (C, TOR): Martin has been abysmal this season. So, of course, immediately after I trade him, he hits two homers. You’re welcome.

Chase Headley (3B, NYY): Headley went 2-for-3 with a homer and scored twice, but the Yankees lost to the Blue Jays anyway. Thanks for nothing, buddy.

Yasmany Tomas (3B/OF, ARI): Tomas doubled and homered, knocking in two runs to stake the Diamondbacks to an early lead…

Gregory Polanco (OF, PIT): …That they were unable to hold. Polanco got the Pirates’ five-run rally started with an RBI double, one of his three hits on the day. He also scored a run and stole his seventh base of the year.

Carlos Gonzalez (OF, COL): Gonzalez had three hits and scored twice, but the rest of his team failed to show up in a blowout loss to the Red Sox.

Travis Shaw (1B/3B, BOS): Shaw showed no ill effects from his minor hand injury, going 2-for-4 with three RBI.

Jackie Bradley Jr. (OF, BOS): Bradley extended his hitting streak to 29 games with another multi-hit effort.

Hyun-soo Kim (OF, BAL): Kim went 3-for-3 with a walk and two doubles. After the game, Buck Showalter suspended him for two weeks without pay.

Adam Lind (1B, SEA): Lind was an absolute monster, going 4-for-4 with two homers and a double. He scored three times and knocked in six runs as the Mariners dismantled the Athletics.

Nelson Cruz (OF, SEA): Cruz had three hits himself, including a homer, in that win.

Scott Kazmir (SP, LAD): Kazmir struck out 12 in a win over the Reds. While he’s struggled to keep the ball in the yard so far this season, the veteran represents a decent buy-low option in many formats.

Dan Straily (SP, CIN): Straily was the tough-luck loser, nearly matching Kazmir in whiffs (11) and allowing only five baserunners. Unfortunately for him, three of them came around to score.

Fantasy Baseball Duds

Nick Castellanos (3B, DET): Castellanos went hitless in four at-bats and struck out twice yesterday in a loss to the Phillies. He’s still hitting .337/.366/.589 on the season.

Ryan Zimmerman (1B, WAS): Zimmerman has shown signs of life lately, but was 0-for-4 with two whiffs last night.

Kurt Suzuki (C, MIN): Suzuki struck out three times in four at-bats. He’s a fringy option at best in two-catcher leagues and worthless in any other format.

Dillon Gee (SP, KCR): Gee struck out six in his four innings, but allowed 10 hits – including three dingers. Probably burned some DFS players who saw a cake matchup with the Twins and rolled the dice.

Anthony Rizzo (1B, CHC): Rizzo was the only hitter in the top half of the Cubs lineup not to get a hit yesterday, dropping his average to a disappointing .234.

Jake Arrieta (SP, CHC): Arrieta allowed more than three runs in a regular season game for the first time in almost a year. He still improved to 9-0, though…

Carlos Martinez (SP, STL): …Because Martinez allowed six runs in his five innings of work. C-Mart has now lost all five of his May starts. He’s sporting some seriously ugly ratios (6.84 ERA, 1.60 WHIP) over that span.

Hector Santiago (SP, LAA): Santiago allowed nearly as many runs (six) as he recorded outs (seven). That dog won’t hunt, monsignor.

Adam Eaton (OF, CHW): Eaton went hitless in five at-bats, striking out twice and leaving four runners stranded.

Joe Panik (2B, SFG): Panik failed to reach base in five attempts, but the Giants won for the 13th time in their last 14 games anyway. #EvenYear

Jacoby Ellsbury (OF, NYY): Ellsbury also went 0-for-5, stranding five runners in the process.

Paul Goldschmidt (1B, ARI): Goldschmidt went hitless in four trips to the plate. He’s hitting just .241/.408/.432 on the season.

Chad Bettis (SP, COL): Bettis was a mess against Boston, allowing seven runs and failing to escape the fifth inning. But if you were foolish enough to start him, you really don’t have anyone to blame but yourself.

Freddie Freeman/Nick Markakis (1B, ATL): The Braves’ two best hitters went 0-for-12 and combined for 15 runners left on base. Somehow, this is all Fredi Gonzalez’s fault.

Jose Altuve (2B, HOU): Altuve went without a hit in four at-bats, and is 0-for-17 in his last four. PANIC TRADE TIME!

Eugenio Suarez (3B/SS, CIN): Suarez struck out in all three of his at-bats last night. It was the fourth time in the past week that he’s whiffed on every trip to the plate.
