Week 18 Running Back Rankings Outlooks
Rhamondre Stevenson, New England Patriots
New England Patriots running back Rhamondre Stevenson had the best game of his season last week against the Jets, handling eight carries for 47 yards and a touchdown to go along with a season-high five receptions for 55 yards and another score as a receiver. Despite rookie TreVeyon Henderson being cleared from the concussion protocol and handling 19 carries, it was Stevenson who wound up with the touchdowns and the big fantasy performance.
The backfield remains split between the two, and it will be tough to expect a repeat performance from Stevenson in the regular-season finale against the Miami Dolphins. Miami has allowed the eighth-fewest PPR points to running backs over the past five games. The 27-year-old back is ranked as RotoBaller's RB19 in PPR formats in Week 18.
Rico Dowdle, Carolina Panthers
Carolina Panthers running back Rico Dowdle (toe) practiced in full for the second straight day on Thursday and has been cleared to play in Saturday's Week 18 regular-season finale against the division-rival Tampa Bay Buccaneers, according to the team's official website. Although Chuba Hubbard isn't going to go away in Carolina's backfield, the 27-year-old Dowdle has earned RB1 duties for the Panthers.
In an all-important game this weekend that will decide the winner of the NFC South, Dowdle will be on the RB2/3 borderline for fantasy managers. He has certainly slowed down since a strong stretch earlier this year when Hubbard was out with injury, and he hasn't found the end zone in the last two games. In the first meeting with the Bucs two weeks ago, Dowdle had nine carries for 29 yards and caught four passes for 14 yards. Since the team's Week 14 bye, Dowdle has 160 scrimmage yards and a TD on 45 touches.
Kimani Vidal, Los Angeles Chargers
Los Angeles Chargers running back Kimani Vidal (neck) is officially listed as questionable ahead of Sunday's Week 18 contest against the Denver Broncos. Vidal is trending in the right direction after getting in two straight full practice sessions to end the week. There seems to be a decent chance that he'll return from his one-game absence this weekend. He'd likely take over as the lead back with rookie Omarion Hampton (ankle) ruled out for this game.
Fellow back Hassan Haskins (concussion) carries a questionable tag into this game as well. Backup quarterback Trey Lance is starting, which could lead to a run-heavy game plan for this offense. Vidal could be looking at a 20-plus carry game, assuming he's able to suit up. Without Vidal or Haskins, the Chargers would likely lean on Jaret Patterson or Amar Johnson. The Chargers' backfield is a situation to avoid in a game where the offense is expected to have a tough time moving the ball with a backup QB.
