With more than a month of the season down and bye weeks hitting, we start to see more rookies expand their roles with the classic "post bye rookie bump." And of course, injuries bring some unexpected names into fantasy relevance.
This applies to all three running backs that will be discussed in this piece: Cardinals Bam Knight, Cowboys rookie Jaydon Blue, and Bears rookie Kyle Monangai.
So, should fantasy managers add Knight, Blue, and Monangai in Week 6? Let's dive in.

Bam Knight Week 6 Waiver Wire Pickups
Rostered: 0% of Leagues
Baller Move: Leave on Waivers in Most Leagues
Bam Knight stepped into a larger role in Week 5 after injuries to Arizona's top two backs in Trey Benson (knee) and James Conner (foot). Knight operated as the clear third back, playing 18.2% of the snaps compared to Michael Carter at 57.6% and Emari Demercado at 25.8%. But Knight was able to find the end zone on his limited touches, ending with four rushes for 11 yards and a score to go with one reception for 13 yards.
Most of Knight's previous time in the NFL came with the Jets in 2022, when he played in seven games and racked up 400 total yards and a touchdown. He appeared in only two games with Detroit in 2023 before being out of football for the 2024 season.

It's possible that Demercado's catastrophic blunder in dropping the ball before the end zone will lead to less work for him and more directed to Carter and Knight. Knight has been active in three of the five games, playing mostly on special teams. And when he has played on offense, he hasn't been particularly impressive or dynamic with his opportunities.
I'd expect the Arizona backfield to continue to run through Carter, who saw the fourth most touches (23) of any running back in Week 5. Knight isn't someone I'd be racing to get on the waiver wire.
Jaydon Blue Week 6 Waiver Wire Pickups
Rostered: 23% of Leagues
Baller Move: Stash in Deeper leagues
Jaydon Blue was active for the first time all season in Week 5 against the Jets. He played on only 14.5% of the snaps and handled four carries for seven yards. The fifth-round rookie was a distance second back to Cowboys' bellcow Javonte Williams, as he played over 70% of the snaps and rushed 135 yards and a touchdown.
It appears Williams has run away with the RB1 job and revived his career in Dallas. He’s been one of the league’s most efficient runners through five weeks, posting a 53.2% rushing success rate, the third-best mark among qualified running backs per FTN Fantasy. That leaves Blue with a limited role and usage. However, he had an excellent rep in pass protection in Week 5 that will undoubtedly be noticed and praised by the Dallas coaching staff. That is one way for young players to earn trust and opportunities.

Of course, we don't get fantasy points for sound reps in pass protection. But Blue is one of the fastest players in the league, running a 4.25 40-yard dash at his pro day. And he had an excellent receiving profile at the University of Texas, combined with some encouraging rushing peripherals. It's feasible that Dallas would want to work their dynamic rookie in more often to create more explosive plays.
It's worth noting that veteran Miles Sanders (ankle) missed Week 5, and he could render Blue inactive in the future if he is healthy. Blue is a decent stash as a handcuff in deeper leagues for his upside, but for fantasy managers stuck in a hole and needing short-term points, he could be left on watch lists.
Kyle Monangai Week 6 Waiver Wire Pickups
Rostered: 10% of Leagues
Baller Move: Add in 12+ Team Leagues
Kyle Monangai and the Bears were on bye in Week 5 and return to action on Monday night against Washington. Rookies often see their snap shares and opportunities increase after the bye week, and that could be a possibility for Monangai.
Veteran D'Andre Swift has again been one of the least efficient runners in the league, averaging 3.3 YPC and a -0.4 RYOE/Att. through four weeks. Both are bottom-10 marks among qualified running backs, per NFL Pro. Monangai hasn't been impressive on his touches either, rushing for 62 yards on 17 total carries (3.6 YPC). And his RYOE/Att., while on a very small sample, has been 3x worse than Swift at -1.2.

But what we know about previous Ben Johnson offenses is that this kind of inefficient, plodding back can still earn volume. See Jamaal Williams in 2022. Monangai hasn't worked into that type of usage yet, but he profiles similarly. The Bears have run the ball six times inside the 10-yard line so far this season, with Swift handling five and Monangai handling one. We'll see how that trends over the course of the season. Similar to Blue, there is contingency value with Monangai that makes him worth rostering, and he could be a sneaky addition before his workload increases.
