Tyler Mahle recently signed with the Texas Rangers. What is the fantasy baseball impact of this move and what is his outlook on the Rangers' pitching staff?

Tyler Mahle signed a two-year, $22 million contract back in December to become a member of the defending champion Texas Rangers. After being traded to the Twins at the deadline in 2022, Mahle ended up making just nine starts for the team in a year and a half due to injury.

The 29-year-old underwent Tommy John surgery back in May, which will hold him out until around midseason of 2024. General manager Chris Young still sees him as a valuable piece of their rotation for the next two years, and he could make a solid impact upon his return.

Tyler Mahle's Fit With The Rangers

When he's fully healthy, Mahle has shown great promise over the past few seasons. In 2023, he made just five starts before getting hurt, but posted a 3.16 ERA with a 3.14 Expected ERA and 1.05 walks and hits per inning pitched. From 2020-2021 with the Reds, Mahle demonstrated his value over the course of multiple seasons, posting a 3.72 ERA in 42 games started with 1.22 walks and hits per inning pitched.

As of now, the Rangers have a plethora of arms they plan to integrate partially through the season. Jacob deGrom and Max Scherzer should be back right around the time Mahle returns, and the rotation at that point will likely consist of them three along with Nathan Eovaldi and Jon Gray.

The Rangers rotation struggled with health all last season, and Mahle figures to secure a spot near the end upon his return regardless of who else is healthy. If DeGrom and Scherzer take longer than expected or other injuries arise, Mahle could end up logging significant innings for a title-contending franchise. The organization appears to be very excited to have him, and it's anticipated that Mahle will be an integral part of the rotation in 2024 when he's healthy.
