Matisse Thybulle is worth considering as a fantasy basketball waiver wire pickup heading into Week 19 of the 2022-23 NBA season.
BALLER MOVE: Add in 12+ Team Leagues
ROSTERED IN: 3% of leagues
ANALYSIS: The Blazers made some moves ahead of the trade deadline but none of them were quite earth-shattering if you ask me. That said, all of the trades they pulled off seem to be so fine-tuned and pointed toward a very particular, known, and defined direction by coach Chauncey Billups.
Matisse Thybulle only played more than 20 minutes 10 times in Philly through the trade deadline. He's done it twice in Portland since arriving, starting both of those matchups on the wings for the Blazers and logging 27 and 30 MP. So far, so good: 100% starting rate.
We'll see go that goes ROS, of course, but Thybulle will bring some saucy defensive chops to Portland and that alone will have him on the court more often than not. Cam Reddish also arrived via trade and seems to feature in Billups' plans, but Thybulle should edge him with a better overall package and more complete skill set.
Thybulle is a very particular player, though, so you should only target him in deeper fantasy leagues that feature as many statistical categories as possible. His contributions come from peripheral things such as steals and minimal turnovers.
He's committing 1.0 SPG while only giving possessions away 0.2 times per game. That sounds like cherry-picking numbers and something easy to accomplish, but only two other players in the league (Dru Smith and Jonathan Isaac) are doing it this season while having played at least 95+ MP through the season. That said, Thybulle has played nearly 650 minutes compared to Jonathan Isaac's 108.
The shooting percentages are kind of respectable (43/34/75) but the volume is so low that they're not even worth checking in most leagues. Again, getting some shares is just a matter of how your league operates.
