One and Done Selections - John Deere Classic

No need to beat around the bush, the John Deere Classic is an event that always suffers from being held the week before the Open Championship. The field is less-than-stellar if we’re being honest with just five of the world’s top-50 golfers in attendance this week. I have no interest in any of those players anyway (that’s code for “I’ve already used them in this contest.”), as the Deere is always a birdie-fest, which brings the entire field into play.
Enter Seamus Power, a player that not too long ago was grinding out Monday qualifiers in an attempt to get starts on the PGA Tour. The Irishman has played well enough over the past two months to now be considered a legitimate threat at TPC Deere Run. Power comes in on the heels of a top-10 finish in Detroit last week - his second top-10 in his last four starts - and brings tons of positive momentum to Illinois. He’s fared well in previous Deere starts, boasts a 68.42 career scoring average in the event, and has posted top-25s in two of his three prior starts on this layout.

It looks like we have nine events left (eight weeks in total), and I probably could make life pretty simple on myself if I played things more conservatively and rolled out Russell Henley. The American is not only one of the safest players on the board to lock in some money at the John Deere Classic, but I also think it is somewhat likely someone rolls out the 32-year-old in this particular game. That, of course, assumes this contest hasn't turned into a contrarian dart throw where everyone tries to zig while I zag, but these are the game theory thoughts that run through my mind while trying to make a selection in this four-person match.
The way I see the board is this: First place this week pays a little over one million dollars, with a solo fifth yielding just over $250k. To me, that screams shooting for the moon with my selection since anything that isn't a top-three performance turns into a trivial payout, so with that thought in mind, I am going to take Aaron Wise - a golfer that can win this tournament if he gets any semblance of a putter.
Wise's home course is TPC Summerlin - a venue that will mimic a lot of the quirks that he gets this week at TPC Deere Run, and I believe the state of his game is as high as anyone in this field when we remove his flat stick. The former Oregon product ranks inside the top-20 of my model in strokes gained OTT + approach, strokes gained total on easy courses, weighted bent play + birdie or better percentage, and is also third in this field in strokes gained tee to green. Some might argue that this is a little too aggressive of a pick, but I am willing to roll the dice with the lack of star power at the top of the board.

What a field we have to choose from this week. Hard to really be able to trust any guy in this field other than MAYBE Berger, so I’m just going to take a shot at a guy that there is no chance I’ll even think about using again in the future but could make it happen for one week. Kizzire usually struggles because many courses are demanding off the tee (especially in terms of length) and he just doesn’t have a great game there. The rest of the game he actually does pretty well, though. This tournament has proven to be a birdie-makers course, and Kizzire is one of those. He’s won two tournaments in birdie-fests before and tends to run up the leaderboard in other events where we see the winner around 20-under. I think this is a good time to take a chance on a guy that’s won on the tour before in a high-scoring environment, but to be completely honest I wouldn’t be surprised if he missed the cut either.

It’s getting into the go big or go home part of the schedule. I liked Scott last week and that has not changed this week. He’s trending up in every category over the last 6 tournaments. The most improved statistic is SG Putting. If he can get hot with that, he can fool in the birdies with the best of them. Go get em Stalls!!
