Tarik Skubal Throwing Off Flat Ground
2 years agoDetroit Tigers left-hander Tarik Skubal (elbow) is making 40 flat-ground throws four times a week less than six months after having surgery to fix a flexor tendon in his left elbow last August. Barring any setbacks, the 26-year-old southpaw could gain clearance to work off of a mound during spring training. Despite the good progress, Skubal is a lock to open the 2023 season on the injured list for Detroit, but he should be able to return to the starting rotation around the middle of the season. Skubal went 7-8 with a career-best 3.52 ERA (2.96 FIP), 1.16 WHIP and career-low 24.5 percent strikeout rate in 117 2/3 innings over 21 starts in just his third major-league season with Detroit. Despite his slight drop in strikeout rate, Skubal was on his way to a breakout season last year before his injury, and he still has a bright future for the Tigers.
