Rhys Hoskins 2023 Outlook: Boring Yet Bankable Fantasy Value at 1B Sapped by Injury
Rhys Hoskins is perennially a strong value pick, delivering 30 homers with a .246/.332/.462 line last season. His 10.7 BB% and 25.1 K% were both worse than his career averages of 13.5% and 23.9%, but he still draws a ton of walks and the strikeouts weren't excessive for a slugger of his caliber. His 25.8% chase rate and 9.9 SwStr% also suggest that Hoskins is better than his surface plate discipline stats. He still cracked 30 bombs and posted a career-best .292 BABIP last season. Hoskins offers solid contact quality with a 94.2 mph average airborne exit velocity and 11.1% rate of Brls/BBE, and the ball flies out of his home ballpark. Hoskins was even projected as Philadelphia's second hitter, providing plenty of counting stats to go with his homers. Sadly, the Phillies announced that Hoskins tore his left ACL in a Spring Training game. The injury is severe, and Hoskins is expected to miss most of the 2023 season if not all of it. Fantasy managers in redraft leagues who already rostered Hoskins will need to scour waivers for a replacement, while you can safely cross him off of your draft board for future 2023 drafts.
