Pirates Sign First-Rounder Nick Gonzales
4 years agoThe Pittsburgh Pirates signed rookie shortstop Nick Gonzales, the seventh overall pick this month, to a $5.432 million signing bonus on Wednesday, which matches the slot value for the No. 7 pick. The 5-foot-10, 190-pound middle infielder might have been the best pure hitter in this year's draft class. Gonzales was the Cape Cod League MVP last summer when he hit .351/.451/.630 with a short, compact swing with a ton of bat speed. He has some strength in his frame but may not develop into a ton of power as a professional, which might make him ticketed for a move to the keystone eventually. Gonzales might not have the arm or the range to stick at the 6 long term, either.
