Michael Soroka Making Progress, Could Return in Multi-Inning Role
Michael Soroka (shoulder) will throw live batting practice on Sept. 2, and if that goes well, he could embark on a rehab assignment in the minors. Soroka has been on the 15-day injured list since Aug. 5 with a shoulder strain, an injury he suffered in his first start as a Cub after they acquired him from the Washington Nationals. While Soroka has worked exclusively from the rotation this year, the Cubs aren't planning on stretching him out to a starter's workload in the next couple of weeks, Maddie Lee of the Chicago Sun-Times reports. Manager Craig Counsell said the Cubs want to "get him to a multiple-inning scenario." Based on that, Soroka could serve as an opener and/or middle reliever when he returns to the Cubs in mid-September. The 28-year-old has posted a 4.86 ERA (3.40 xERA), a 1.13 WHIP, and 90:25 K:BB over 17 starts and 83 1/3 innings this season.
